Will Global Property Investments Suffer From Rising Rates?

Placeholder

Low interest rates worldwide have been a big help to commercial property, but now markets are signaling that might soon change—particularly in the US with President-elect Donald Trump's policies likely to boost inflation

Investors are hurrying to dump government bonds in the US, Asia and Europe, pushing prices down, the Wall Street Journal reports. And when bond prices fall it usually means real estate values are next in line. Experts say the boom commercial real estate has enjoyed over the last few years was driven by investors wanting better returns than what they could find in bonds, but now that dynamic could be shifting as safe government bonds start to offer yields more in line with real estate returns, and without all the risk.

While interest rates and bond yields are still incredibly low, change could be coming. The market believes there's close to a 100% chance of a Fed rate hike next month. [WSJ]
