UK Court To Determine How Soon Brexit Can Actually Happen

While Theresa May insists Brexit will begin in March, a London court will determine later this week whether it’s actually up to her to decide.

Attorney General Jeremy Wright, the prime minister’s most senior legal adviser, will try to convince the judge that May alone has the authority to enact Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, Bloomberg reports. If he’s successful, May will be able to trigger the UK’s exit from the EU without much delay.

But if the judge thinks May first needs to consult her fellow lawmakers, Brexit would be pushed into the House of Commons and the House of Lords, both largely anti-Brexit. If that happens Britain’s EU exodus could be delayed for a year, if not derailed entirely. [Bloomberg]
