Walmart Plans To Use Jet.Com To Soar Above The Competition
A year after Walmart acquired e-commerce startup Jet.com for $3.3B, the two companies have announced plans to begin selling apparel online.
The move is part of a push by Walmart to compete with brands such as Amazon by offering specialty goods and higher-quality items that shoppers will not be able to obtain elsewhere, including a new bed-in-a-box brand.
The items will be sourced primarily from online sellers acquired by Walmart and will likely include clothes from ModCloth and Bonobos in the coming months, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The website is also planning to introduce a line of private-label food and grocery items and will add more premium baby, beauty and pet products to the list as well. The items will be designed specifically with packaging for shipping and handling.
In addition to these offerings, Jet.com will be introducing a line called "Uniquely J," a brand that is designed primarily to target the urban millennial group, the WSJ reports. The line will carry items such as coffee, olive oil, laundry detergent and paper towels.
Walmart has set itself apart as the main competitor to Amazon in recent months, and these moves are likely to continue fueling that fire.
