Walmart Slashes 7,000 Back-Office Jobs

Placeholder

Walmart is planning to cut 7,000 of its back-office jobs around the country as the nation’s largest private employer automizes tasks to cut costs.

Those slotted to lose their jobs are mostly accountants and invoicing professionals, typically long-term employees who are also the highest paid hourly workers on-site, the Wall Street Journal reports. Walmart says it is replacing these jobs with a new money-counting “cash recycler” machine that was tested in around 500 stores this year.

The move is part of a larger shake-up as retailers try to adapt and stay alive in the age of Amazon. Part of that move has been to increase wages—Walmart upped its starting wage to $9 an hour last year, or around $18,700 a year. [WSJ]
