Starbucks Wants To Create Its Own Currency

Placeholder

Starbucks says it wants to start its own "digital currency" by rolling out a "Starbucks Rewards Prepaid Card from Chase," a prepaid debit card the coffee shop is developing with JP Morgan Chase.

An extension of its loyalty card program, the new debit card—and the smooth upscale repackaging (kind of unlike its coffee)—was announced at the company's annual shareholder meeting this week.

The Starbucks' card will be usable at any retailer that accepts Visa, Fortune reports. And despite industry speculation—and the digital currency buzzword—the debit card isn't expected to pose a threat to fledgling digital currency Bitcoin. [Fortune]
