Amazon To Expand Private-Label Offerings

Placeholder

Amazon plans to roll out new lines of private label products in the coming weeks, including the e-commerce giant’s first push into perishable foods.

The new brands—with names like Happy Belly, Wickedly Prime and Mama Bear—will include food products, such as nuts, spices and tea, along with household items including diapers and laundry detergents.

The brands will start appearing as early as late May/early June. Amazon has spent several years developing the private-label lines—including tapping branding consultants and manufacturers, such as TreeHouse Foods, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The move represents a new advance in the ongoing battle between e-commerce and brick-and-mortar, and comes just as e-commerce is spurring growth in the retail sector—while the stocks of Macy’s, Michael Kors and Kohl’s are nose-diving. [WSJ]
