GM To Spend $5.4B on Factory Improvements

General Motors announced today that it will invest $5.4B in domestic factories, with three Michicgan plants getting $783.5M in upgrades. The country's largest automaker did not specify other targets of the investments, which will be released over the next three years. GM has focused on modernizing its facilities and protecting its employees since its 2009 bankruptcy and subsequent federal bailout. Some industry analysts view the news as a preemptive olive branch. This summer will bring GM, Fiat Chrysler, Ford Motor, the United Auto Workers union together for contract disccusions that should be especially contentious given the UAW's right to strike (a first since the Great Recession) salary increase requests.
