Jobless Claims Spike to Five-Month High

About 297K Americans filed new unemployment benefit claims last week, the most since February. Economists had expected there to be 275K new claims filed. Still, this morning's numbers from the Department of Labor showed the 18th straight week of claims below 300K, the threshold widely considered to indicate a healthy job market. The previous week's numbers were revised upward from 281K to 282K claims. The four-week moving average of claims rose by 4.5K to 279.5K.
