When a study ranks social democracies by a nation's living and health standards, Scandinavian countries are often at the top of the list. The most recent analysis is no different.

This massive study—funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and published in the Lancet— reveals Iceland, Sweden and Singapore share the top slot when it comes to health goals set by the United Nations, Bloomberg reports. The US doesn't even rank in the top 10—America is squished between Japan and Estonia at No. 28 overall.

Gun crime was among the biggest factors that worked against the US ranking, in additon to natual disaster response, HIV, suicide and obesity. Where the country scored its highest marks was in water, sanitation and child development. [Bloomberg]
