California Is Now The World’s 6th-Largest Economy

Move aside France—California, pushed forward by strong growth and a rising dollar, is now the world’s sixth-largest economy.

The most populous state in the Union has a GDP of $2.5 trillion, according to state data released Tuesday, which puts it above recession-weary Brazil, Bloomberg reports. Not bad for California, which has a population of less than 40 million people, considering Brazil’s economy is fueled by over 200 million.

California’s economy grew by 4.1% last year, nearly double the 2.4% growth achieved by the US at large, and on top of that California created the most jobs of any state—more than the second and third most populous states combined. [Bloomberg]
