President Donald Trump has just appointed the official who will oversee the federal government's real estate portfolio.

Dan Mathews, the new appointee to be the General Services Administration's Public Building Service commissioner, has spent the last 14 years as a congressional staffer. He most recently served as staff director for the House Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management.

Mathews replaces Norman Dong, who stepped down from the position in March to enter the private sector. Michael Gelber has held the position on an interim basis, but will return to his role as Public Building Service deputy commissioner following Mathews' appointment. The PBS commissioner role does not need Senate confirmation, and Mathews will be sworn in Aug. 3.

No appointment has been made yet for the GSA administrator position, which oversees the entire agency, but Mathews' appointment to head the GSA's real estate arm should allow for some progress on stalled projects.

The new PBS head will have several big decisions on his plate, including how to move forward with the search for a new FBI HQ after the project was canceled earlier this month
