Tower Bridge Shuts For Refurbishment

Placeholder

Crossing the City to the south side of the river is about to become a giant headache for commuters. Tower Bridge is shut to motorists and cyclists from Oct. 1 for three months while the City of London carries out “major essential works”, according to City AM. The bridge will remain open to pedestrians on all but three weekends until December.

Three London Bus routes that use Tower Bridge will be affected, as will bike routes. Making matters worse is Network Rail’s work on Tooley Street, which further restricts car traffic. However, TfL says closing both will only make a small difference in disruption, but to do both separately would disrupt road use continuously until late 2018.

The 122-year-old Tower Bridge was last refurbished in the 1970s and now requires major maintenance. [CityAM]
