Google To Sublease Akamai's Cambridge HQ Beginning In 2020

Life science may have dominated recent neighborhood real estate news, but tech is still growing in Kendall Square

Google has agreed to sublease eight floors of Akamai Technologies’ headquarters at 150 Broadway when Akamai moves across the street to 145 Broadway in November. Google plans to take over at 150 Broadway in the fall of 2020, the Boston Business Journal reports. Boston Properties owns both buildings.

The sublease enables Boston Properties to knock down Google’s current office at 325 Main St. and move ahead with plans for an 18-story tower in its place. Google plans to fill that future glass office tower, giving the technology company room to double its Greater Boston workforce, which includes more than 1,600 Cambridge employees.

A wave of new construction in Kendall Square is driven by the neighborhood’s essentially nonexistent vacancy rate in both the office and lab sectors. Along with Boston Properties’ Kendall Center developments, MIT is underway with a 2M SF Kendall Square Initiative and looking to redevelop the 14-acre Volpe Transportation Center.
