Multimillion-Dollar Renovation Allocated For 1 Of Houston's Oldest Senior Housing Developments
Telephone Road Elderly Apartments, one of the oldest senior living developments in Houston, will soon be refreshed, and the residents had input in how.
Houston Housing Authority awarded $19.4M to upgrade and modernize the facility. Opening in 1978, Telephone Road accommodates elderly and disabled residents at 6000 Telephone Road, south Houston, according to Houston Housing Authority.
Launching early next year, the renovation will improve the utilities, common areas and all 200 units within the building. The last renovation was in 1997.
“Seniors are the pillars of our city,” Houston Housing Authority Board Chairman LaRence Snowden said. “This redevelopment will not only improve their community but will also restore pride in the place they call home. To do this, we have given the residents a voice in what amenities will be included in the new plans. They have made their voices heard, and we are excited to make it a reality for them.”
Managed by Tarantino Properties Inc., the community features 180 one-bedroom units and 20 two-bedroom units. A complete redesign of all the unit interiors, common areas, laundry facilities, the library, dining hall and outdoor recreation space is all part of the renovation plan.
Other improvements include extensive and substantial upgrades or replacement of water piping and plumbing systems, electrical systems, existing HVAC system, roof replacement, elevator replacement, as well as energy and weatherization improvements.
The funding for Telephone Road is earmarked from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs through low-income housing tax credits over the span of 10 years.
“Since my arrival in Congress, I have been supportive of the low-income housing tax credits program,” U.S. Rep. Al Green said in a statement. “It is my honor to see the revitalization of this housing complex for elders come to fruition."
