Why This Matters

Some of the hottest projects coming to the Bronx are taking shape along the Harlem River. Developers and city officials recently celebrated the breaking ground of the Peninsula, a five-acre mixed-use complex in The Bronx. Located in Hunts Point, the project includes a complete renovation of the Spofford Juvenile Detention Center. Brookfield Properties has officially announced its waterfront Bankside mixed-use project in Mott Haven, near the southern tip of The Bronx.

As these major developments progress, residents of the Borough have many questions concerning the future of their neighborhood. According to the NY Times, the Bronx has the highest number of rent regulated units in New York City. Will longtime residents be pushed out from rising land prices? Will traffic to the Bronx increase congestion? Will the City continue to invest in TOD development that truly serves the community? With the growth of industrial properties along the Harlem River, how does this affect the community core?
