John A. Isakson, Chief Financial Officer of Preferred Apartment Communities, has spent his entire professional career in the real estate industry. He has a broad depth of knowledge of both the private and institutional side of the industry in acquisitions, dispositions, finance, and asset management. Prior to his role at PAC, Mr. Isakson was a founding partner of Williams Asset Management, along with John Williams in January 2006. Williams Asset Management was an investment and asset management firm that ran a private equity fund from 2006 to 2013. Mr. Isakson also served as CEO of Tarpon Development, LLC – a company he co-founded in 1999. Prior to starting Tarpon Development, Mr. Isakson served as vice president of finance for Julian LeCraw & Company, and as a loan officer for Wachovia Bank financing real estate assets in various sectors. In his roles, he has raised equity and debt and closed on transactions with a wide-range of financial instruments – from traditional construction and acquisition financing, to sophisticated bond and tax credit financing. He has participated in transactions ranging from the acquisition and renovation of properties and the construction of high-rise apartments, to the refinancing and repositioning of a variety of apartment communities. Throughout his real estate investment career, Mr. Isakson has participated in transactions representing over 22,000 units and a total capitalization of over $2 billion. He earned a masters in economics from The University of Georgia in Athens and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Tulane University in New Orleans.

In the fall of 2009, Lance Patterson formed Patterson Real Estate Advisory Group LLC, having most recently served as President and Chief Operating Officer at Barry Real Estate Companies where he was responsible for the company’s capital market activities and general administration. Lance’s career spans 30 years in commercial real estate finance and includes experience as a banker, capital advisor, developer, loan guarantor and investor – all built on a foundation of deeply analytical capital skills. Over his career, Lance has forged relationships across the capital markets and enjoys working closely with clients to help leverage great products through appropriate capitalization.

Margaret "(Marjy") Stagmeier is the founder of TriStar and real estate investment firm, and President of TI Asset Management, Inc an independent asset management and real estate advisory firm for international and domestic real estate investors, based in Atlanta, Georgia USA. TI Asset Management has managed in excess of 5.0 million sqft of commercial and 3,000 units of residential real estate in the southeast United States and employs 30 professionals. Prior to starting TI Asset Management, she has served in executive capacities for a consortium of international real estate firms. Her experience draws from a wide range of real estate activity, from acquisition to mortgage banking and asset management to disposition. She has managed over $1.0 billion in real estate funds for predominately U.S. and European investors. Ms. Stagmeier and TriStar have developed a sustainable affordable housing model which uses affordable housing communities to stabilize low-performing elementary schools. Specifically, she targets blighted apartment communities near failing elementary schools, offers rents affordable for working poor families, and provides community wrap around services including free after-school programs, summer camps, affordable health care and gardens. Ms. Stagmeier is a graduate of Georgia State University with a B.S. in finance and has successfully completed the Georgia Certified Public Accountant examination. She is an active lecturer and contributing author to many periodicals analyzing the challenging industry of asset management, and co-authored the book Real Estate Asset Management: Executive Strategies for Profit-Making. She is on the board of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, The Atlanta Public School Affordable Housing Taskforce, Chair of 3Star Communities, Star-C and former Vice President of the Atlanta Commercial Board of Realtors.

Mr. Bhoopathy is a managing principal and head of capital markets responsible for debt relationships, asset dispositions, and transaction management. In addition, he leads contract documentation and closings related to new acquisitions, development, and financing for all investments. Mr. Bhoopathy has more than 23 years of hospitality industry experience and has participated in more than $4.5 billion worth of real estate transactions for the Noble organization since joining the firm in 1999. He became a partner in 2006 and is a regular panelist at lodging, investment, and financing conferences. Mr. Bhoopathy earned a BS from the Cornell University School of Hospitality and is a past-president of the Cornell Georgia Chapter and the Atlanta Hospitality Alliance. He is also a member of the Atlanta Capital Markets Council for the Urban Land Institute.

Chris Eachus is a Partner and founding member of the firm and is responsible for developing and managing all partnership business in Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, and Raleigh. His responsibilities include sourcing and capitalizing acquisition and development opportunities, creating and implementing asset management strategies and overseeing property management and leasing functions within his region. Joining the Crocker organization in 2003, Mr. Eachus was directly involved with the acquisition of over 5 million square feet of office space throughout the southeastern United States — with a total value of approximately $1 billion. Previously, he worked in the investment banking department of Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc. in New York within the company’s Financial Sponsors Group. Mr. Eachus is a CFA charter holder and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from Emory University.

Gary Bechtel leads the investment management leadership teams with direct oversight of all portfolios. Gary Bechtel served as President of Money360 and was responsible for developing and executing Money360’s expansion strategy. Gary also served on Money360’s Credit Committee and Board of Directors. Prior to joining the Company, he was Chief Lending/Originations Officer of CU Business Partners, LLC, the nation’s largest credit union service organization (CUSO). Previously, Gary held management or production positions with Grubb & Ellis Company, Meridian Capital, Johnson Capital, FINOVA Realty Capital, Pacific Southwest Realty Services and Hometown Commercial Capital. Gary began his career with the Alison Company and over the past thirty-four years has been involved in all aspects of the commercial real estate finance industry, as a lender and as an intermediary, including the origination, underwriting, structuring, placement and closing of over $10B in commercial debt transactions, utilizing various debt structures which have included permanent, bridge, equity, mezzanine and construction on transactions of $1M to $250M. These transactions were placed with a variety of capital sources that included life companies, commercial banks, credit unions and equity and mezzanine funds, on property types that included office, retail, industrial, multifamily, hospitality, self-storage and manufactured housing. He is or has been a member of the Mortgage Bankers Association of America, California Mortgage Bankers Association, National Association of Industrial and Office Properties, and International Council of Shopping Centers. Gary has spoken at numerous industry events and written articles and has been regularly quoted in a number of regional and national publications.

As the CEO of RangeWater Real Estate Group, Steven oversees the firm’s day-to-day business activities while also focusing on strategy, executing the business plan, securing new business, negotiating partnerships, and capitalizing projects. He places a high emphasis on team development and process to ensure Rangewater meets the goals of its investors, clients, partners, and employees. Prior to co-founding RangeWater, he was the Manager of the Denver, Colorado development office of Hines Interests where he oversaw the development of commercial office, land and residential projects. In addition, he served as Manager of acquisitions for Hines’ Southwest region and was responsible for acquiring existing office and land assets in Texas, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico for various Hines investment funds. While at Hines, Steven completed more than $400 million in office and land developments and acquisitions. Steven also served on the advisory committee of the $800 million Hines U.S. Office Value Added Fund. Steven holds a Master’s of Business Administration in Finance and Real Estate from the Columbia Business School and a Bachelor’s in Political Science from Davidson College. He is a member of the Multifamily Bronze Council of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), the Board of Directors of the National Multi Housing Council (NMHC) and the Real Estate Group of Atlanta. In his spare time, Steven enjoys cycling, golf, skiing and coaching youth sports for his three children.

David is a partner in the firm’s Atlanta office and is co-chair of the firm’s Secondary Markets and Derivatives Group. He also focuses on affordable housing financing, opportunity zone finance, tax-exempt bond securitizations and tax credit syndications, as well as other related financing products. David has experience representing institutional lenders, commercial and investment banks, syndicators, and investment funds, in the acquisition, disposition and financing of a variety of properties including affordable housing, health care facilities, industrial facilities and office and mixed-use buildings. In addition, he has served as workout counsel for financial institutions and has been involved in the restructuring and recapitalization of several distressed tax credit syndicators.

Lili C. Martin-Mashburn is an Associate in the firm’s Tax practice. Ms. Martin’s experience includes working as a law clerk for the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Georgia and as an extern for the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office, Appellate Division. Ms. Martin was also a summer associate for Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP, as well as most recently a judicial extern for the Supreme Court of Georgia for the Honorary Keith Blackwell. Ms. Martin graduated from Emory University School of Law where she received the Dean’s Awards for Outstanding Academic Achievement in Legal Writing, Research, and Advocacy Program and Complex Litigation. Before attending law school, Ms. Martin obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from North Carolina State University where she graduated summa cum laude and was Valedictorian of her graduating class.

As a tax partner at Aprio, Darrin is known for his exacting technical expertise, providing high-quality service to his clients in the real estate, construction and retail and hospitality industries. Over the past 28 years, Darrin has helped his clients structure their businesses in ways that mitigate tax liabilities as well as help them qualify and obtain state and federal tax credits, like the Low Income Housing Tax Credit. He specializes in tax consulting, tax preparation and business consulting, primarily working with clients in the real estate industry. Darrin has decades of experience working with affordable housing projects, commercial real estate projects and real estate funds, including projects subject to the requirements of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). He works hand-in-hand with both developers and funds to provide guidance and ensure timely and accurate returns. Darrin is responsible for developing tax-related policies and procedures for the entire firm. Additionally, he heads up the firm’s recruiting efforts at The University of Georgia. He earned his Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Accountancy degree with an emphasis in taxation from The University of Georgia. Jerry McGaughy is the President and Managing Director of Epic Community Impact Fund. He has been involved in advocating for Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Funds from the beginning. Following passage of CDFI Fund enabling legislation, he was an early adopter and worked to spread the good news about the benefits of becoming a CDFI. With over 12 years of community lending and investment experience, and over five years of community development consulting, Jerry was the Founder of Atlanta-based BusinessLINC Community Loan Fund dedicated to providing loans and technical assistance for community development in underserved areas. He also worked to both develop and manage the National BusinessLINC Coalition in Washington, D.C., a joint initiative of the Clinton Administration and the National Business Roundtable. Jerry rounded out his extensive experience with CDFIs by becoming a CDFI Fund grant reviewer, evaluating applications using the CDFI Fund’s establishing review criteria including such factors as community development performance, business strategy, marketing analysis, management capacity, and financial health and viability. Recently, Jerry facilitated a joint venture partnership with a global real estate private firm to create the Epic/Virtua Opportunity Zone Fund I, LP a $100M Opportunity Fund to provide investments in multi family, mixed-use, and commercial development projects located in Atlanta’s designated Opportunity Zone communities. Jerry attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. where he received his BA in Finance and Economics.

An experienced commercial real estate advisor for over 20 years, Wesley is an Opportunity Zone National Leader and Audit Partner with Cherry Bekaert’s Real Estate & Construction industry group. Based in the Atlanta office, he provides guidance to clients on real estate tax credit transactions, pre-acquisition due diligence, purchase price allocation, tax mitigation structuring, real estate consulting and financial statement audits. Wesley’s technical ability encompasses an assortment of expertise with clients in the hotels and resorts, student housing, military housing, multi-family/affordable housing, and retail/office sectors. He also consults on equity rollups, public filing preparation and large-scale real estate portfolio acquisitions. In addition, Wesley has helped real estate holding companies, developers, contractors and private equity funds with transactions ranging from $25 million to $4 billion. Prior to joining Cherry Bekaert, Wesley led the Atlanta office and Commercial Real Estate Group for the Southeast for a Top 15 National Accounting Firm. He previously held various Board of Directors positions with local chapters of NAIOP, Central Atlanta Progress, and the City of Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, he served on the Board of Directors for the Atlanta Chapter of the Urban Land Institute for five years (including three years as Treasurer) and was on the National Board of Directors for the National Multi-Housing Council. Wesley is a regular speaker at various real estate conferences around the nation.
