Google In, Apple Out: The Battle Of The Data Centres Gets Fierce In Dublin

Google is to open a second south Dublin data centre at Grange Castle, representing a €150M investment.

The centre could be worth up to €55M a year to the city's economy, Silicon Republic reports.

Earlier this year South Dublin County Council proposed to release a further 477 acres from rural use to enterprise use. The council insisted that there was a "lack of availability of serviced employment-zoned lands with good transport links capable of accommodating significant projects of scale," and that business parks were nearing capacity.

Expansion at Grange Castle comes as Apple pulls the plug on plans for an €850M data centre at Athenry. The decision comes as the Supreme Court considers an appeal against the 263K SF centre and indicated it would have to refer some aspects to the European Court of Justice. The potential planning delay was sufficient for Apple to decide to abandon the project, the Irish Times reports.

Apple first announced the County Galway plan in 2015. They will now build in Denmark instead.
