The city of Arlington, Texas, and Esports Venues LLC are lining up $10M to turn the Arlington Convention Center into a new venue dubbed “Esports Stadium Arlington.”

The city outside of Dallas announced plans for a 100K SF stadium on Wednesday. According to the city of Arlington’s release, Esports Stadium Arlington will be the largest stadium of its kind in the world.

The stadium will go up in Arlington's entertainment district to house competitions in the burgeoning world of esports. Esports, the term for competitive video gaming, boasted a global market of $493M in 2017 and is projected to hit $1.5B by 2020.

“This esports stadium will transform the Arlington Convention Center and position the city as the epicenter for esports in the heart of North America,” Populous senior principal Brian Mirakian said in a statement. “Esports fans will encounter a live experience unlike any other, by way of space for up to 1,000 spectators, VIP amenities and year-round event potential.”

“I know the gaming community across the globe is going to fall in love with this stadium and with Arlington,” Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams said in a statement. “We’re ready for the biggest tournaments in the esports industry to call Arlington home.”

The stadium is slated to open this fall, and the city’s proposed agreement with Esports Venues LLC includes a 10-year lease with a 10-year renewal option.
