Midway Airport to Get Major Upgrades

Chicago

Midway International Airport announced a $250M makeover, which could create as many as 1,000 jobs. The Southwest Side facility will get a larger parking structure (1,400 new spaces) and a new 80k SF security checkpoint inside the terminal. Best of all, Midway's especially targeting improved concessions. The city hopes to get one concessionaire to run all restaurants and retail shops, instead of multiple firms as it is now, Crain's Chicago reports. Last year, Midway customers bought $89.2M worth of food and products, an 8% uptick from 2013. However, new aviation commissioner Ginger Evans feels it could do better, saying it's at the bottom in terms of food, beverage and retail sales compared to large airports like O'Hare International. The city is also planning to add 20k SF of shopping space at Midway. [Crain's]
