Santa Wants To Bring You A Pop-Up Shop

Holiday shoppers should expect to see more pop-up shops, mobile commerce and discounts this year, according to a holiday trends report from CBRE.

Not all retail sales will transfer to online, although plenty will — so keep that iPhone and iPad handy. One-third of holiday shopping will be done on phones and tablets alone this year, the report said.

“As e-commerce reshapes modern retailing, blurring the lines between online and in-store activity, retailers and shopping center owners must continue to adapt with fresh approaches,” CBRE Head of Retail Research for the Americas Melina Cordero said.

Charlotte landlords should be prepared for shorter-term leases, CBRE Charlotte senior associate Katherine Southard said. Constantly rotating pop-up shops encourage variety for shoppers and experimentation for retailers.

"Millennials continue to crave the social aspect of visiting stores and dining out,” Southard said. “Because they are more comfortable with technology and typically research products before entering a store, we may see non-food retailers shrink their footprints or employ fewer sales associates.”

This may contribute to a rise in discounting as online and brick-and-mortar retailers compete on price, the CBRE report said.
