Former Worcester State Hospital To Be Biotech Space

Placeholder

The Commonwealth has tapped the Worcester Business Development Corp to develop 500k SF of biotech space from the former Worcester State Hospital, which has been empty for more than 25 years. The redevelopment is part of the Commonwealth's Open for Business Initiative, the goal of which is to redevelop underutilized state assets, the Boston Business Journal reports.

The Worcester State Hospital—formerly called the Worcester Insane Hospital and the Worcester Lunatic Asylum—was one of the first state insane asylums in the country. It opened in 1830 and closed in 1991. The property is depicted here on an early 1900s postcard. The Worcester Business Development Corp hopes to complete the redevelopment in two and a half years.
