A Virtual Groundbreaking For Real Space

Something we don't see every day (not yet, anyway): a virtual groundbreaking. Suffolk Construction chairman and CEO John Fish wore a VR headset and shoveled some virtual dirt to celebrate the start of a new 38k SF addition and complete interior renovation of the company's HQ in Boston. Also in the pic: Mayor Martin Walsh, Suffolk chief innovation officer Chris Mayer and Suffolk Northeast president Angus Leary.

According to Suffolk, the company employs the latest in virtual design and construction and lean construction principles to improve team-wide collaboration, reduce waste and increase efficiency on all its projects, including the HQ expansion. The new HQ will include collaborative workspace, an amphitheater, a new employee cafeteria, a fitness and wellness center, and an outdoor basketball court. It'll be completed by the end of 2018.
