In one of the biggest economic development wins for Georgia since Mercedes-Benz moved its headquarters here, the U.S. headquarters for the elevator division of a German conglomerate is developing a new facility at The Battery at SunTrust Park, including a 420-foot elevator-testing tower.

Thyssenkrupp Elevator Americas announced Thursday that it is establishing its North American headquarters at a build-to-suit, three-building development on land owned by the Atlanta Braves. The project would include 235K SF of offices for its corporate headquarters along with shared service and administrative functions, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reports, along with the elevator-testing tower.

The deal will bring 900 full-time employees — or 6% of Thyssenkrupp Elevator's workforce — involving information technology, engineering, administration and training positions to the $200M project, including more than 650 new jobs to the region.

“Atlanta is synonymous with mobility and innovation, and this move gives us one complex in a national hotbed of innovation that will allow us to serve our customers better than anyone in the industry, while providing a high quality of life for our employees,” Thyssenkrupp Elevator Americas CEO Rich Hussey said in a release.

The deal comes two months after Bisnow first broke news that Thyssenkrupp was eyeing the site for a new project. Already the Cobb County Development Authority approved a $264M bond to fuel 10 years of property tax breaks for the site owned by the Braves off Circle 75 Parkway in a deal previously known as “Project Dashboard.”

The new facility is expected to deliver by 2022. It was unclear as of press time where the Thyssenkrupp employees at the new project would be moving from. The company has an extensive presence in Metro Atlanta already, including Thyssenkrupp North America in Alpharetta, Thyssenkrupp Elevator Americas and AIN Plastics, both in Kennesaw, and Thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions in Cobb County, according to the company's website.

Thyssenkrupp's Innovation Complex will be the heart of the company's testing grounds for both its TWIN and MULTI elevator systems. TWIN uses two high-speed elevators cars per shaft, a design that is debuting at Portman Holdings' Coda office tower in Midtown. Thyssenkrupp's MULTI elevator system is a ropeless elevator system that can travel up, down and sideways.

“Our world-class university and technical college systems will provide Thyssenkrupp access to a deep talent pool and our technology infrastructure will provide a suitable home for future growth,” Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal said in a press release.
