SPORT OF KINGS

Send us your nominees for the 35 Under 35.  Deadline is Fri, May 9. Also, now's the time to sign up for the next Bisnow Breakfast & Schmooze with Anthony Lanier, May 13. We're doing something different this time: Holding it at Leopold's Kaf? in G-Town. Anthony will show us around Cady's Alley that he designed, including hot new club L2. Great Parking. Special thanks to sponsor Archstone.

No, we don't mean buying buildings, we mean going to the races!  We at Bisnow donned our horse country attire and headed out to The Plains on Saturday for the 83rd Virginia Gold Cup. We felt like we were at NAIOP or CREW because everywhere we saw real estate folks. We didn't know you were all so royally inclined. (We should speak for ourselves: We had a tent, and thanks to all of you who came by!)

Up on Members Hill at the Bisnow tent, Sibdu COO Bob Woods and wife Susan, Mitre's Rafe Katkin, 3DG CEO John Goldman, and Gilbert Randolph law firm founder Scott Gilbert. John's getting used to driving out to NoVa; 3DG's working with Brookside Communities on what he tells us is the largest commercial development in Fauquier County. They're doing the 100K SF 30 acre village center for the planned residential community, slated to break ground late '09.

Jones Lang LaSalle

Also at our tent: Kane Construction's Kenny Woodruff, Vornado's Christina DiSandro, Cassidy's Kim Keleher, Studley's Diana Sechrist, JBG's George "Rockin' Madras" Vincent, Kendall Arney, and JBG's Brooks Blake.

Then we made our way to the North Rail's famous hardy party crowd and found: the Turner Construction gang! As you'd expect, their tent was packed, and we hear some of them are still whooping it up. Above: Turner's Julie Mock, Drew Langsam, Kevin Mahoney, and Dennis Delisle, and CBRE's Dale Martin. We were reminded some of Turner's current projects are 1775 Penn. Avenue, the MLK Jr. National Memorial on the Mall, Ft. Belvoir Community Hospital, and Salamander Resort & Spa. No wonder they need a break!

Douglas Development's Grey Pfarr, CBRE's Jerry Luczka, Applied Risk Management's Amy Talton, Surrounds Landscape Architecture's Chad Talton, Turner's Chris Jahrling, Geoff Marshall, and Tom Esau.

Over at the FOX Architects tent on the South Rail, they were celebrating their fifth anniversary (they even arrived in white stretch hummers). We snapped principals Andy Yeh, J.P. Spicker, Sabret Flocos, and Bob Fox (fifth principal Jim Allegro is in Bosnia on a church mission).  The 70-person firm just won an IIDA design award for BP's government affairs office downtown.  And Akridge and CIM Group just awarded FOX a feasibility study for Union Square.

We should have put this in last week but decided, since it was a Gold Cup pre-party, to hold it for our themed issue today.  We were on hand at the Grand Hyatt's new Cure Bar & Bistro for their lavish debut. GM Ken Hood joins chef de cuisine Kevin Villalovos in showing us where the restaurant gets its name: curing various foods like pickles and proscuitto. Cure is located in the space that was once Butler's Cigar Bar, and has been redesigned by the interior design team at Adamstein & Demetriou.

This also doesn't quite fit, but as long as we're putting in pictures of beautiful weather (and people), the other evening we joined the 13th annual International Interior Design Association awards at the Roof Terrace Restaurant of the Kennedy Center. The Potomac makes a nice backdrop for Humanscale's Kristen Shiner, Washington Workplace prez John Murphy, and Perkins + Will's Tama Duffy Day. Tama took home an award for sustainable design for the US Green Building Council's HQ on Mass Ave.

RTKL's Dennis Gaffney and Bognet Construction's Jennifer Bognet. Congrats to Jennifer on two things: Bognet's award for its work on SoundExchange, Inc. at 1121 14th Street; and her and hubby Jim's new 12-week-old baby girl!
