Big shout-out to great sponsor Patriot Contracting, which has just been awarded an exciting new project in Sterling: the Eastern Loudoun Sheriff's Station, consisting of an 18k SF building on a 4-acre site, to be completed in early ‘10. Congratulations!

The outside of this Anacostia building, 2405 MLK Ave, doesn’t look that impressive, but inside it’s been gutted and rebuilt thanks to Redskins greats Art Monk and Charles Mann, who will use it as HQ for their after-school program, the Youth Power Center. The building is historic—formerly Carver Theatre—but it’d been abandoned for 20 years. Don’t worry about its outside appearance; they’re not fixing the façade until the end of the project to avoid catching the attention of vandals.

We snapped this of Art and Charles, who tell us the foundation operated for 16 years without a home, which made it hard to hold events. Now, with a library, 90-seat auditorium, and slightly used computers donated by O’Melveny & Myers (did you know law firms turn over their computers every 18 months?), they’re ready for a ribbon-cutting around late January. The project received generous support from Bennett Group (management), Clark (securing materials and labor), and Gilford Corp (asbestos abatement), but Charles and Art also put nearly $3M of their own money into the building. By the way, it’s now appraised at $4.6M, so they’ve obviously done something right. (Feeling philanthropic? Check out their website.)

Condo Authority

Development had its share of problems. In 2000, Marion Barry offered to sell them the building for $1 (that’s cheaper than a half-smoke!), but things stalled until the end of Anthony Williams term. Eventually they acquired it for $237,000, with a dilapidated roof and several feet of broken bottles and needles strewn on the floor. But Charles says that’s in the past, and he couldn’t be more excited to have a new space and safe haven, just a half a block from the metro.

Studley’s Studs

Don’t be fooled by the charts and desk. Joanna Lohman and Craig Lussin, brokers in Studley’s VA office, are also some of the fiercest national athletic competitors. Joanna plays for Team USA soccer and will join the Washington Freedom when the new Women’s Professional Soccer League launches next spring. Craig and his wife, Jeannette, are Ironman triathletes (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run), and their 13-year-old son, Hunter, broke a 28-year-old record when he became the youngest Ironman in the world. Joanna and Craig teamed up to create the first carbon-neutral calculator, which helps law firms, nonprofits, and corporations to tally and offset their carbon emissions with a click of the mouse.

Robin Sparrow, of Studley's Suburban Washington office, raises money for the National Prostate Cancer Coalition through One Lap of America, a 4,000 mile cross-country auto race. Each year, Robin raises funds through corporate sponsorships of his vehicle and individual donations. This year, Robin once again drove his BMW 3 series (which drives around town covered in sponsor decals) and has raised $200,000. To keep track, check out his blog.
