Big shout-out to great new sponsor Crystal City. Rainn Wilson (aka "Dwight") from NBC's The Office will be appearing at the Marriott Crystal Gateway on Sept 27th for a Voices for Justice Event.  Ticket information. Welcome aboard to the fab Crystal City!

Okay, we admit, we were just trying to get your attention with the headline. But, not to stretch things too much, this story is also about a Number Two. Quick, what's the second biggest tenant rep firm in the area, now that Staubach has folded into Jones Lang? Hey, you cheated and looked down at the picture.

Yep, that's legendary broker Fred Ezra on the left, who was Studley's third employee here in 1969 (with Peter Speier and Barbara Pryor, back so far they even did landlord rep in those days). He did big lease deals until 1980 when he decided to start his own firm, which now has 26 brokers and an equal number of staff (they do a lot of financial analysis). We dropped in to see him this week in his Bethesda office, where we also met CFO Mike Hetchkop in front of their Snow White picture (Fred and his wife are modern art collectors). Being hip, like Studley, Staubach, and Madonna, Fred dropped his first name out of the firm's title, which is now just plain "Ezra."

That's Fred's wife of 46 years, Starr, after whom Fred named the couple's 76-foot Horizon motor yacht; he's had a number of boats and says he's named every single one after her. (That's either love or lack of imagination.) They often take the boat to New England in the summers, and this past weekend to St. Michael's. "My first love is my wife and grandchildren, but my second love is boating," Fred says. Considering he has eight grandchildren that's saying something.

This picture taken just last night is of Ezra president Glenn Meltzer, right, with Dr. Allen Lichter, CEO of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, at the grand opening of the ASCO headquarters on Mill Road in Alexandria. Together with Ezra EVP Gene Martin, Glenn negotiated for ASCO to purchase 123k SF of the new building as an office condo using industrial revenue bonds for financing; the association previously occupied space in three different buildings. Ezra has also represented law firms like Jackson & Campbell and Banner & Witcoff, huge AID contractor Chemonics, and the National Committee for Quality Insurance. At the moment, it's actively representing our friends at Reznick Group in their search for 150-200k SF in the Bethesda area. [Poke Glenn.]

At a recent event put on by insurance king Alan Meltzer, we couldn't resist a picture of the heart-warming and illustrious Begelman family (parents Bob and Arlene with son Ryan), every single one of them in real estate. Arlene's been doing leasing for 28 years, since she started as one of just five agents at Carey Winston (now merged into Transwestern). Ryan's in the real estate group at Carlyle. And Bob, who in the '70s founded Jerry's Subs & Pizza (now 105 locations) also owns lots of strip retail around the Beltway (like 130k SF at Shady Grove Road, and properties in Laurel, Dunkirk, Langley Park, Frederick, and other places our note-taking couldn't keep up with).
