The world would definitely be a livelier place with more characters like DC developer Anthony Lanier.  As you can tell from our pics, the guy was born with a twinkle in his eye, big smile—and mischievous sense of humor.  He also knows how to take risk and develop, bringing our world Cady's Alley, the Georgetown Ritz and Cineplex, the Ritz downtown and now (across the street) 22 West, a luxury 92-unit condo building delivering this summer.  We visited him at his Eastbanc offices on M Street yesterday to see what's up.

 

He's been called the informal Mayor of Georgetown but might just create a stir if he ever became a real public official, don't you think?  Here he is yesterday with son Philippe (who recently joined the firm) and EVP Mary Mottershead on EastBanc's retrofitted green roof with views across the Potomac to Rosslyn.

 

What's the common denominator of his buildings?  Drum roll:  He has to be able to walk to them!  Born in Rio and living in Europe until age 35, he's a confirmed "villager" who loves G-Town life because he can be a pedestrian, walking in and out of stores, bumping into people he knows on the street.  Why the name Eastbanc?  "People like names with directions, and banks sound solid."  What's cool about 22 West?  A unique zinc exterior, first in DC.  He says the development is already 30% sold (units are $800k to $3M).  Despite the slower condo market, he says he will "not drop prices," but will step up services to attract a top clientele. The Exxon station on the property (he says it'll be the "sexiest gas station man can develop") will get a canopy hiding it from view inside the building. By spring, it will be one of the first Exxon stations around to have a green roof and an upscale convenience store.

Anthony took us in for a sneak peak of his swank new hotspot, L2, which opened last month across from Leopold's in Cady's Alley. As a self-proclaimed product of the "pot-smoking roaring 60s," he said he wanted a "place where grown-ups could have fun." Above, he mixes Imperial Vodka and Absenthe for a cocktail bearing a name that we unfortunately cannot print. (Did we mention this interview was really fun?)  His other new retail additions in G-town (trendy Juicy Couture and American Apparel) open their doors this summer.

 

Though we tried to coerce Anthony into dancing on the L2 bar for a picture, we settled for this one of him in the Cady's courtyard popping through the "Helix" sculpture by John Dreyfuss. Anthony just got back from Moscow last week where he and wife Isabel became grandparents for the third time with the birth of daughter Nadine's third child. He's also still keeping up the active pace of a squash dad with his youngest, 14-year-old Camille, who he takes to Edinburgh and even Egypt for tournaments.  You can bet he's great with kids.
