August 26, 2008

We're planning to take the rest of the week off, in honor of Labor Day, the good weather, and the need to catch up on a bunch of other things. (We're up to 12 employees, with three more starting shortly.) We imagine you'll survive a couple days without us. Thanks for all your support, and see you in September!

We are truly awestruck by the intellect and industry of the Washington real estate community: For a totally unannounced contest on a sultry August afternoon, when we would have thought most of you were on the beach or golf course, we got 25 correct answers—within 10 minutes! Within hours, we got seemingly hundreds (we stopped counting). Congratulations, all you smarties.

This is not General DeLuca, but General James Birdseye McPherson, who gives the ING Clarion asset (and our winning answer—the McPherson Building, at 901 15th St.) its name. Quite a number of you included the "Birdseye," indicating that you are either really impressive Civil War buffs, or just intellectual shortcutters (like us), nimble at Wikipedia. Showing our afore-mentioned skill, we would like to point out that McPherson was a major general in the Union Army, killed at the battle of Atlanta, in honor of whom the above statue was erected and dedicated at McPherson Square on October 18, 1876. (We would make an erudite comment at this point about how the raised hoof in an equestrian statue is some kind of code for the manner of death, but we actually don't know if that's true.)

Oh, right, on to the winner. No, this is not CB's Jennifer Brody, but close: It's a Matthew Brady photograph of McPherson. Why do we mention Jennifer? Because she and CB colleague Patt Marr are joint winners, each entitled to a BLT lunch with latter-day real estate commanding generals Marc DeLuca and Bobby Schwartz. For the solemn historical record, here were the first 25 correct answerers, in alphabetical order (of whom we note CB provided 20%); maybe they have a Bisnow Contest Alert System throughout the office:

Bob Blair, Akridge

Apologies to the many of you who answered with buildings of other names: Homer, Farragut, Lafayette, Pershing, and even John A. Wilson.

Speaking of ING, we've been meaning to congratulate it and Brookfield (each 50% owners) on the delivery of 77 K Street in NoMa the other day, clearly destined to become a landmark on the area. Eleven stories, 326k SF. On time and on budget. 16k feet of available retail space, public parking opening September 2. Keep those BLT contests coming, Marc, and we'll keep the pictures flowing.

We want to call your attention to the Community Improvement Day on Saturday, September 13, that our friends at DCBIA are holding at the Douglass Community Center in Ward 8. More info.
