LAST NIGHT’S
NAIOP OSCARS

Big salute to sponsor Atlantic Parking, this month introducing DC’s first sustainable garages program. Please see more below.

If the streets looked empty last night, that’s because more than 550 of you packed into the Tysons Ritz for NoVa NAIOP’s 23rd annual "Best" Awards—and as usual more than a few stayed into the early morning hours celebrating. (What makes you think we’re talking about you, Kathryn and Chris Ciliberti, Brett Hitt, Al Gooden, and Susan Stein?)

Crowd at Tysons Ritz for NoVa NAIOP Awards

And what recession? The sea of schmoozers actually had a lot to celebrate: Awards for best transactions—AOL/Raytheon (CB and JLL), BRAC 133 (Duke and Clark), and Hilton (JLL, Cushman, BF Saul, HITT, OPX, Mark G. Anderson, and McGuire Woods)—would have been impressive even in the go-go days.

Peterson Companies admin, Vivinia Villavicencio, and Jon Peterson

The incredibly humble Vivinia Villavicencio, Peterson Companies admin for 13 years, pretty much had to be motored up to the podium by her boss, Jon Peterson, upon her shock at being named Member of the Year. She got a standing ovation.

Barbara McDuffie with Hispanic College Fund’s Fern Barrueta, Cushman’s Peter Berk, Boston Properties’ Jon Kaylor and Peter Johnston, and Balfour Beatty’s John Tarpey

For her fourth year, Beers & Cutler’s Barbara McDuffie co-emceed with the NAIOP NoVa chair (Balfour Beatty’s Dave Birtwistle the last two years, about to relinquish duties to Buchanan Partners’ Brian Benninghoff). Here she’s with other young pals: Hispanic College Fund’s Fern Barrueta, Cushman’s Peter Berk, Boston Properties’ Jon Kaylor and Peter Johnston, and Balfour's John Tarpey. Barbara’s off to Kiawah for Thanksgiving with nine family members and friends, where she’ll make her famous oyster dressing (cornbread crumbs, celery, onions, fresh oysters, and “tons of butter”), then golf and bike to work it off.

ING Clarion team at NAIOP Awards

These guys from ING Clarion have three things to smile about: awards for Best Interiors, Building Common Area; Best Building Renovation; and Best Building, 4-7 Stories. After the triple play, their biggest worry was who would take home all the hardware after the cordials, sponsored by Quadrangle—another big winner for Best Building, 8 Stories and Above for 1850 Towers Crescent.

CB’s Brad Flickinger, Beacon’s Karen Gentry, and Duke’s Jerry Dawson

CB’s Brad Flickinger, Beacon’s Karen Gentry, and Duke’s Jerry Dawson were reminiscing about their time together as JLLers. In fact, they all worked at LaSalle Partners before the merge with Jones Lang Wootton in 1999. Ancient history, for you newbies.

Davis Carter Scott’s Robert Atkinson, Greenberg Traurig’s Thomas Galli, WestDulles Properties’ Mark Hassinger, former local Opus chief Jim Lee, and Prudential’s Joe Bonner.

Jon Smith, Tracy Allen, Andy Vanhorn, Patricia Redding, Vanessa Bridges, Candy Adams and Angelea Busby.

Finally, they can relax: committee members after the awards and seven months of excruciating detail work. This group definitely deserved one of the bright blue martinis at the reception sponsored by HITT: Jon Smith, Tracy Allen, Andy Vanhorn, Patricia Redding, Vanessa Bridges, Candy Adams, and Angelea Busby.

MEET OUR SPONSOR: ATLANTIC PARKING

Atlantic Parking's Martin Janis, with JBG VP Laurie Flenner and Thomas A. O’Neil

At all of its locations, Atlantic Parking will be promoting recycling, cutting down on paper consumption, and using green products for maintenance. And there may be cash in it for you: Many of its locations will offer special parking rates for fuel efficient and carpool vehicles. The Green Garage concept is the brainchild of president Martin Janis, above with JBG VP Laurie Flenner and Thomas A. O’Neil at JBG’s Fishers Lane parking garage in Rockville. Martin is the parking pioneer who founded Atlantic Valet in 1984. Over the last 20 years, it's grown into one of the best known parking management companies in the area.
