BO MENKITI?

For those of you who follow specific industry sectors in the region, check out our recent roundtables with law firm managing partners and trade association CEOs. We will shortly be adding tech CEO and medical services CEO roundtables as well.

INC.com ranked Bo Menkiti as #3 on its 2007 list of "Coolest Young Entrepreneurs." Realtor Magazine put him on the cover of its "Top 30 Under 30" America's Top Rising Stars issue.  So we here at Bisnow are asking: "Is Bo Menkiti the next Jair Lynch?"

A Harvard '99 grad, and now only 30, Bo just completed his largest project to date, The Ilora:  a 21-unit "middle market" condo development in the Brookland neighborhood of NE at 400 Evarts St.  As with vintage Abdo and Lynch projects, the building was completely dilapidated when Menkiti went to work. Recently placed on the market, half the units are already sold (one bedrooms start at $180,000 and two bedrooms in the high  $200,000's).

Menkiti is a firm believer in focusing on neighborhoods, much like Abdo focused on Logan and Lynch focused on U Street. So what's Menkiti's neighborhood?

Brookland!! Like other areas that are now coming up or have come up already (14th Street, H Street, Logan Circle, Georgia Avenue), the 12th Street corridor in Brookland was once a central business district—with cobblers, butchers, and other small businesses on every corner. With is proximity to downtown and its great access to transportation, Bo is hoping Brookland is primed once again to be one of DC's thriving neigborhoods.

The Bo Menkiti Entrepreneur timeline:

Age:

8: Takes first job delivering newspapers

10: Opens snow shoveling business and has neighborhood monopoly by age 11

12-17: Starts and runs landscaping business during junior high and high school

18-21: Pays way through Harvard by bartending and running "Dorm Crew," a dorm cleaning service

21-23: Learns the ins and outs of corporate America as a strategy consultant

23-26: Works at non-profit 'College Summit,' helping low income high school students get into college

27: Sells homes through Coldwell Banker, realizes potential of Columbia Heights

28: Opens Keller Williams DC brokerage franchise, founds Menkiti Development Group

30: Completes Ilora, smaller condo projects, and numerous single family homes

40: ???

We've often been asked to supply our subjects' emails, so Bo has agreed to be our first guinea pig:  bo@menkitigroup.com
