Where's Karen?

650 business executives—and counting. That's how many have signed up for tomorrow night's Bisnow “Back to Business Total Schmoozarama.” But we want you, too! Open bar and dinner buffet, Park at Fourteenth. Crazy low price. Sign up now!

Our headline refrences Karen Evans, government tsarina under President Bush. We tracked her down, though it wasn't like she was hiding: She was just appointed to the Board of Directors at the Center for Internet Security.

She's also working on recommendations for an upcoming CSIS Commission report on the cyber workforce for President Obama. Karen runs a one-person consulting shop, KE&T Partners, and teaching a class at the OPM center in Shepherdstown, W.V. She assures us she's having fun, too, last year following her daughter’s high school b-ball team and her son’s football team and show choir. She also lost 40 pounds and upgraded every appliance in her house: “Those steam cleaners you see on TV actually work!” Might her cyber security solutions include the Ginsu Knife?

Trends from Lee

Former Army Deputy PEO EIS Lee Harvey tells us procurements aren't coming out as quickly as advertised, and it’s having an impact on B&P costs and teaming within industry. He sees a trend toward source selections that are low cost/technically acceptable as opposed to best value, and Lee thinks that’s simply a matter of Contracting Officers cleaning out their over-filled in-boxes.

SharePoint 4.0

This morning we were in Rockville to meet Daniel Cohen-Dumani, CEO of Portal Solutions and SharePoint expert. He tells us Microsoft is expected to come out with the 4th generation of SharePoint in Q2, which will make it easier for companies to use SharePoint with their backroom systems to create things like financial and sales dashboards. The platform will also leverage more social networking tools, mainly Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. (As if you could name another?)

Daniel grew up in Switzerland (our heart was strong, but his accent melted our ice cream) and married a Maryland girl while working for Accenture, after getting a masters in comp sci. He was CIO at ExecuStay when it was purchased by Marriott and then worked at On Campus Marketing before starting his company in ’02. He stays busy with four kids and loves skiing. (He is Swiss after all.)

NVTC’s Kristin D’Amore is currently taking applications for the spring session of the association’s FastTrac TechVenture program, which provides startups with a comprehensive business planning program. Applications are due a week from today, so email Kristin now at kdamore@nvtc.org. (Bonus points if you say good things about Ohio State football.)
