Vivek & Karen

Big shout-out to great sponsor Marymount University. Earn a career-advancing graduate degree in business in one of their different programs. Don't miss the chance to learn more at the info session on Wed, Feb 11 at MU's Ballston Center. See ad to the right for more details.

DC CTO Vivek Kundra will be named the new Karen Evans at OMB, so this morning we called the original OMB e-gov tsarina, who tells us: "He's proven to be a real tech visionary, who also understands the citizen service aspect of the job, so I know he's going to do great."

Here's a picture from our archives of Vivek and his soon-to-be former boss Mayor Fenty. (It was "Dress Like Your Boss Day" when this was taken.) Karen tells us Vivek will have great opportunities in collaboration and transparency, which she enjoyed, and predicted the transition will be seemless. "He's going to pick up where we started and can take it in any direction he wants."

Here's Karen (if you can see her behind all the paper) in her old office at OMB. The main reason she thinks Vivek will do great? "It's essentially the same job he had with DC, but now on a much larger scale." And if you're wondering, Karen tells us she loves retirement and is organizing her West Virginia home (her office is finally clean) and spending time with her two teenagers.

Pimp My Ride

Here's something even Jay-Z doesn't have in his car: A cell phone network. Here are Berico Technologies' Sean Lane, COO Nick Hallam, CEO Guy Filippelli and Senior VP Will Houston, showing off their new self-contained, mobile communications network in the back of an SUV. They are currently developing this next generation technology for military and intelligence communities (and teenage girls who like to text message). "You put this in a humvee and you control your own cell phone network for miles," says Sean, who heads Berico Tailored Systems, a Baltimore-based sub of Berico.

Guy and Nick co-founded the Arlington-based company after studying at West Point (Nick was Guy's plebe). Guy's "Eureka!" moment came when he was working for the Army in Baghdad and saw the need for high-end technical expertise. The two started offering consulting services to their clients and have established a breeding ground for cutting edge technology that's attracted a diverse group of innovators. "We've been ruthless about building and protecting Berico's team culture," Nick said.

Mobile Business Twitter

It's official: Twitter is everywhere. Intridea senior partner Barg Upender told us his company just launched a new mobile app for its "Twitter for business" product, Present.ly (available on iPhone, Google Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, and Adobe AIR desktop application). "Present.ly allows me to keep in constant contact with my team in a way that's much easier than email," Barg said. Translation: No more sick days.
