THE CLOUD DECADE

We’re donating a portion of proceeds from our Women’s event Friday to the American Red Cross for Haitian relief. We’ll be presenting a check at the Heart for Haiti fundraiser tonight at the Hyatt Regency, co-hosted by MOI, Arent Fox, Vornado, Jones Lang, OPX, Skanska, and others. Thanks to all for their help.

In 10 years, 80% of global computing could be done in the cloud, says Mike Nelson, Georgetown prof and Chairman of the Tech Section at the American Assoc. for the Advancement of Sciences.

We snapped Mike, center, this morning at a Brookings symposium, with Google’s Jonathan Rochelle and Brookings VP Darrell West. When implementing cloud, Mike says the federal government needs to be a smart buyer because it guides the market. "The Internet took off in part because DoD selected TCP/IP to connect its system."

The other half of the panel: Information Technology and Innovation Foundation’s Robert Atkinson and Microsoft SVP Brad Smith. Robert says the US needs to take a more proactive tack in fighting cyber crime, working with friendly countries to create more stringent penalties: “We can’t just say ‘Please don’t do this,’ or the Internet will never be a legal space.”

NEW GTSI CEO

GTSI COO Scott Friedlander, right, with former GTSI CEO Dendy Young

GTSI COO Scott Friedlander, right, here with former GTSI CEO Dendy Young, will take over as CEO when Jim Leto retires Feb. 15. Scott came to the company in ’01, after 19 years at Xerox. Jim will gradually move out over the next year, remaining on the company’s board until April and working as a consultant until the end of the year.

ESCAPES

Tom McMillen and UE CEO Jim Tousignant

Everyone knows (and he’s certainly hard to miss) ex-Bullets star and former Congressman Tom McMillen, who created Secure America Acquisition Corp in 2007 to find a homeland security company to buy. Well, the market’s changed a bit, and last night we dropped by Georgetown’s Four Seasons to tip our hat to his acquition instead of a part of Ultimate Escapes, competitor to Exclusive Resorts in the hip new “Destination Club” business category. The small-looking (but actually normal sized) guy with him is UE CEO Jim Tousignant. Jim, who started the business in '04, tells us he was on the 67th floor of the second World Trade Center building at the time the first was struck on 9/11. Fortunately, he ignored the PA system, which advised occupants of the second building to stay put. After walking down, he was exiting when it was struck by the second plane.

Others on hand: (i)Sage (say it fast and it’s a play on words) Managing Director Edwin Miller, former IBM public sector chief Ken Thornton, and Computer Data Systems founder and current University of Maryland Board of Regents Chair (in fact, for seven of the last eight years) Cliff Kendall

SOLEMNLY SWEARING

Secretary of Transportation Sean Connaughton (former chair of the Prince William Board of Supervisors) and Tech Sec Jim Duffey flank NVTC President Bobbie Kilberg

NVTC President Bobbie Kilberg, who served as co-chair of Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell’s transition team, was in Richmond over the weekend for the new guv’s swearing in. That’s her with state Secretary of Transportation Sean Connaughton (former chair of the Prince William Board of Supervisors) and Tech Sec Jim Duffey. You can read Jim’s first interview as a public official here. We’ll give a nice plug to the NVTC: They’re hosting the governor next week.
