The Great Entrepreneur Search! We'll be announcing our "35 Under 35" shortly. Thanks to great anchor sponsors Deloitte and Greenberg Traurig as well as Cabot Consultants and Comerica, and media partner Fortune Magazine; judges Phillip Merrick, Mary MacPherson, Mike Daniels, Mario Morino, Dendy Young, and Scott Frederick; and Valhalla's Gene Riechers for hosting winners, guests, and sponsors at his home June 10.

Secretary of Defense Gates does not have his eyes closed in the picture below because we can’t multi-task with pen and camera, but clearly because he is unable to believe he is going to appear as our top picture today. We were with him last night (oh, and about 700 others) at the Business Executives for National Security Eisenhower Award Dinner at the JW Marriott. We almost went into the bathroom and stapled three stars onto our shoulders to fit in, but then we noticed that CIA Director Michael Hayden and US Attorney General Michael Mukasey were also in civilian clothes so we decided simply to impersonate the Secretary of Agriculture. See, you don’t know who that is either.

What does all this have to do with tech? Gates told the crowd he’s focusing on enemy surveillance and reconnaissance. “From my first day on the job I could tell the entire DoD wasn’t doing everything they could to help our troops,” says Gates, who took the post in December 2006. “Some were working on procurement and future technology to fight wars down the road. That’s great, but the focus of everyone needs to be ‘What can I do to help our troops today?’”

We’ve really got that eyes closed thing going in this issue, don’t we? The guy with his eyes closed is Gen. Duncan McNabb, who is the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Vice Chief of Staff for the Air Force. He’s standing with Sean Ryan, Chief of Security Force Generation at JCISFA, wife Linda McNabb, Boeing VP John Sams, and Michelle Ryan. The General is soon headed off to West Virginia University for his youngest daughter’s graduation.

Army Lt. Gen. Tom Metz, his “first wife” Pam and Inland Capital Markets Group Prez Tom McAuley. Metz heads the Pentagon's Joint IED Defeat Organization. The DoD just made it a permanent organization last week, so Metz tells us he’s reorganizing for the long haul. “Sadly, IEDs are here to stay.” With all that hard work, it is good that Metz has a vacation coming—off to the Blue Ridge Mountains on Memorial Day weekend.

Lt. Gen. Craig McKinley, Dir. of the Air National Guard, TenX owner Frank Muller (think he’s from Texas?) and Army Sgt. Sal Digaetano. McKinley tells us the Air National Guard, like the rest of the Air Force, is working on recapitalizing their fleet. “Most of our planes are between 24 and 30 years old, so it is a huge project.” Sgt. Digaetano, from Brooklyn, was one of four servicemen honored at the event. Shot three times in Iraq while protecting an injured soldier, he has received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
