The nominations are in and our committee is busy selecting the "35 Under 35" entrepreneurs of the region. webMethods founder Phillip Merrick and former Netpreneur leader Mary MacPherson are co-chairing the committee. Look for the group to be announced in mid-May. And thanks again to our partners in this search:  Deloitte, Greenberg Traurig, Cabot Consultants and Fortune Magazine.

Something about spending Friday night partying on a college campus seemed right to us, so we grabbed our fake ID and ran to George Mason for the Volgenau School of IT&E Awards Gala. We joined 385 of our closest techie friends in doing keg stands at a lavish dinner to raise scholarship money for the next wave of tech CEOs.

Volgenau Dean Lloyd Griffiths stands with Wachovia's Todd Rowley and his wife Susan and (on the ends) GMU's Bill Reeder and wife Candace. Lloyd, who was named to the board of GTSI on Thursday, tells us the government services provider is focusing on port security. "The talk is always about the passengers, but we are looking at every aspect of the airport from ticket takers to fencing on the runway," he said. Once school ends, Lloyd will race his Harley Sportster out to the airport with his wife for a 16 day trip to Maui where he can't wait to bury his Blackberry in the sand.

Patriots basketball coach Jim Larranaga was asking if either Brian Dunbar of Dunbar Consulting or Marc Broderick of GMU can shoot a 3-pointer. Not that Mason needs it, because we heard Jim bragging about the four incoming recruits who were each first-team all state. Oh, and don't think you can only talk hoops with the coach, because last August he was named Associate Professor in the school's Executive MBA program.

GMU Prez Alan Merten and Knowledge Consulting Group VP Tom Sanders. We heard from Alan's wife, Sally, that in June he's heading to Munich, Syria, the UAE, and China on a two week trip on behalf of the University. In Munich, he'll take part in a summit on the role universities have in the entrepreneurial age. The only downside is the trip will pull him away from his newest grandson Wyatt, who was born two weeks ago.

Vistronix Prez Deepak Hathiramani and GMU's Arun Gurjale. When he is not closing his eyes for pictures, Deepak tells us his company's helping the Dept. of the Interior rework its records management system. "We are making sure all of their records are safe and setting up standards and practices for them in the future," he says. One record Deepak knows by heart is that of his beloved New York Yankees, which he watches almost every night.
