Maryland Parties, Too

This Saturday, DC will be the center of college football! The start of bowl season happens at RFK, at the first-ever EagleBank Bowl. Navy v. Wake Forest. Be there! Please see ad at right for details.

We’ll give you one guess what we did last night. If you answered “attended another fabulous holiday party,” you’re right! And if you somehow got it wrong, well, we’ll just assume you’re new here (in which case, welcome). So what party? That’d be the 250-person Tech Council of Maryland Holiday Networking Celebration at the North Bethesda Marriott.

This was a big sprawling party. The only thing our lens was unable to get was the snow ball-sized crab cakes being served. For our government sales folks, the TCM’s next big event is a conference at Johns Hopkins on Jan. 7 on how to sell to the State of Maryland.

Recently retired IBM Public Sector head (and former TCM Chairman) John Nyland, Pierce Financial’s Robert Tillson, and current TCM Chairman Ed Rudnic. John tells us he’s enjoying retirement after stepping down from his post in late October, but still sits on the boards of the TCM and University of Maryland and was recently named to Maryland Gov Martin O’Malley’s STEM Committee. But he says he still has plenty of time for golf and is waiting for the weather to warm up to put his boat back in the water.

Northrop Grumman’s Ellen Quinn with LogicStudio’s Dan Dzemitis and Mel Landin. Mel tells us his company helps manage NASA’s IT department (seriously) with it’s Logicstudio Enterprise eXchange System (LEX) that streamlines business practices for medium to large government agencies. No wonder Northrop and Lockheed are pairing with the Reston-based startup. Mel tells us he’ll be spending the holidays creating an artificial intelligence business intelligence (or an A.I.B.I. as the cool kids say) widget, which we’re assuming is fun for him.

R2integrated’s Jody Stoehr, Garson Claxton's I.J. Hudson and Citizen Bank’s Owen Burman. R2integrated does digital marketing for the likes of Heineken, Black and Decker, and Ford. The last time we photographed I.J. he was holding a woman’s purple shoes, which we hear didn’t make his wife too happy, so we made him put down Jody’s shoes before this photo (we’re kidding!).

Expense Reduction Analysts’ Phil Gross, Innovative Business Inc.’s Ted Olsen and Jefferson Wells’ Myron Vansickel and Jeff Harrison. Jeff tells us his company helps “keep CFOs out of jail,” by providing internal audits, technology risk management, and tax work, along with finance and accounting. Phil tells us he’s debating whether to buy a motorcycle (he just got his license).  He hasn’t, but says, “I’ve come close.”

Entrepreneur Craig Liddell with University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute’s Jon Gottlieb and Brad Peganoff. Brad tells us UMBI is opening its GMP biomanufacturing facility to Maryland biotech companies to analyze proteins (we think). “It’s expensive for companies to pay for a machine they may never use, so we let them use our stuff when they need,” says Brad for all those in need of processing molecules for an afternoon.

DP Clinical’s Jim Hamer and CEO Devinder Poonian (she’s the DP). Devinder can’t tell us about any of her clients, but guarantees they’re doing some cool clinical trials for a new vaccine and a new spinal cord treatment. Jim and Devinder are partying later this week at the annual company holiday party complete with a Yankee Swap (that’s where people can take each others’ gifts) and pot luck. “People get competitive with the food they bring,” Devinder says. Not us; we’re lazy in the kitchen, so we’d bring a bag of Oreos and call it a day.

David Stegon just made you want to leave your desk and get a few dozen Double Stuf Oreos and a glass of milk, right? He’s sorry about that. He’ll make it up to you by writing about your company is you email him story ideas at David@Bisnow.com.
