Happy Election Day!

Here's hoping your wait in line isn't too long today. Well, no matter who wins, there are going to be a bunch of new people in Washington real soon, but it appears the old guard is not running out the clock. We recently sat down with Department of Labor Assistant Secretary & CIO Pat Pizzella, who was appointed just a few months after President Bush took office in 2001.

As you can guess, Pat has seen nearly everything in the 17,000 person department. “When I started, we had about seven different e-mail systems – now we have one,” Pat says. Before leaving office, Pat says he is working on HSPD-12, the government-wide program to provide federal employees with PIV cards to allow access to Federal facilities and information systems. He’s also working with the Department of the Interior as they prepare to take on DOLs HR & payroll operations. One of his biggest initiatives has been serving as Managing Partner of govbenefits.gov—a web site that lets citizens see what benefit packages they may be eligible for.

The New Rochelle native came to Washington in 1981 as a Special Assistant to the GSA Administrator. He’s worked for a number of agencies, including the SBA, and served as a member of the President’s Council on Management Improvement in the 1980’s, and a member at law firm Preston Gates policy group in the 1990’s. “I’m not sure what I’m going to do when this administration ends, but I’ll find something fun,” says Pat, who will certainly spend time golfing at Westfields and watching his beloved New York Giants.

The CEO’s Shrink

In these economic times, we are guessing our CEO friends could use someone to talk to, so we ran out to Falls Church to meet Dr. Hany Malik, a clinical psychologist (he’s got an MBA as well) and founder of Suntiva Consulting that was recently named No. 170 on Inc Magazine’s Fast 500 list. Hany’s company advises on organization and leadership, but also knows its way around the federal procurement market: Suntiva recently won a $52 million contract to consult on procurement for the Marines Corps.

Hany grew up in Cairo with his father, the Episcopal Bishop for the entire Middle East. He came to America to get an MBA from SUNY-Binghamton after studying at the University of Cairo. He got his doctorate in clinical psychology from the American School of Professional Psychology (he actually practices some), before taking a job with a large international consulting firm. He started Suntiva in 2002 and now has more than 40 employees. And how’s this for timely? The day we met Hany, his wife was scheduled to deliver the couple’s second child. Congrats!

Run! Geek! Run!

Usually when nerds are running, it’s to escape a bully, but on Saturday 601 area techies donned their running shoes for charity at the inaugural Run! Geek! Run! to benefit the Equal Footing Foundation, the NVTC’s charitable arm. The 8K race (that’s 4.97 miles, we looked it up) was in West Potomac Park and took runners around Haynes Point. Evan Weisel, principal at Welz & Weisel Communications tells us the race will return next year and likely include an award for “best geek outfit” and a children’s fun run.

David Stegon once ran for vice president of his elementary school. He lost, thus ending his political career. He’ll be at the Qorvis Election Party tonight, so say hi there or send story ideas to David@Bisnow.com
