DISA DOLLARS

Don't forget tomorrow's Roger Baker event has been changed to the Sheraton Premiere and will start at 7:15am. Last chance to sign-up!

Want to know where DISA Computing Services Director Alfred Rivera is spending his money these days?

DISA Computing Services Director Alfred Rivera

Speaking at IDGA’s Cloud Computing for DoD & Government at the Alexandria Hilton this morning, Alfred said deploying technology for RACE (Rapid Access Computing Environment) and Forge.mil has been easy, but he needs vendors who can speed up the accreditation process to move from development to T&E to production. And a cloud note: “The biggest cloud challenge will be for software vendors to change their model to SaaS.”

DISA Computing Services Director Alfred Rivera

To prove that the government is in touch with reality, Alfred says he does follow customer and market trends. “A year ago, if you would've told me to put Linux on a mainframe, I would’ve thought you were crazy. But it works.”

Wu-chun Feng, director at Virginia Tech’s Synergy Lab

Wu-chun Feng is director at Virginia Tech’s Synergy Lab. He says the costs of government-funded super computers are through the roof: For instance, DOE’s Cray Jaguar costs $104 million—before facility costs. (The laptop we use cost $599, but we had a coupon.)

FAMILIAR SCHMOOZER

Fred Farmer, CAO at Silver Spring-based ITSolutions

We’d introduce you to Fred Farmer, CAO at Silver Spring-based ITSolutions and a panelist at tomorrow’s Breakfast & Schmooze (note the new time and location!), but you probably remember him as the Acting CIO at FDA. Fred tells us ITS, which has more than 500 employees, specializes in IT consulting and infrastructure support. His company is consolidating FDA's decentralized infrastructure support into a centralized shared services center, along with managing the technical infrastructure for the USDA Graduate School. Fred has one of the best hobbies ever: He and his buddies created their own mini-PGA Tour, complete with major and minor tournaments played at the area’s top courses.

ONE OF US!

We run into tons of IT people, but there aren’t many (OK, none) that makes us think of an Olympic athlete. (You prefer to compete with your brains.) So today we’re here to give you hope because John Benton, a member of the US Olympic Curling Team (that’s him sweeping on the right), is an IT nerd just like the rest of us. John works as an IT professional specializing in automation technologies for a healthcare company in his native Minnesota. U-S-A!

OPERA MAN

Saturday night we snapped this at a Washington National Opera fundraiser at the French Embassy of former UNESCO official Andre Varchever, Object Video chairman Raul Fernandez, and “co-father of the Internet” Bob Kahn, right, and wife Patrice Lyons flanking developer Chris Donatelli. Bob and Patrice tell us “the interoperability of heterogeneous information systems is the cutting edge of Internet research today.” We sort of understand that, but feel on safer footing recounting their tales of cruising the Nile and visiting Sharm el-Sheikh late last year for the fourth annual Internet Governance Conference. They’ve been to all of them, in Athens, Rio, and Hyderabad, and this year will attend in Lithuania. By the way, Bob’s a big opera fan, and recommends Wagner’s Percival.
