BLACK TIE
AND DENIM

Big shout-out to great sponsor Virginia Tech's Executive MBA Program!  Go from middle manager to effective executive in just 18 months. See ad to the right for more details and tell'em we sent you.

It was James Bond meets John Wayne at Friday's Northern Virginia Community Foundation Gala at the Reston Hyatt as the dress code called for "black tie and denim," confusing just about everyone in attendance. Oh, and did we mention our friend CGI CEO Donna Morea was being honored with NVCF's community leadership award?

Donna (black dress) between husband Jeff Chandler and Sally Merten, wife of GMU President Alan Merten, joined Lee Technologies COO (and former Va CTO) George Newstrom and wife Susan. Donna tells us CGI has grown mostly organically the past couple of years but may soon make a push into the M&A market. Oh, and speaking of Alan Merten . . .

STC

That's Alan with former DynCorp CEO Paul Lombardi and CSC's Don Wright. We'll forgive Alan for leaving the event a little early considering Friday was the George Mason basketball team's Midnight Madness (first official practice) that included student give-a-ways and a dunk contest. We couldn't stay up late enough to cover it, but we'll assume Alan chose to perform a 360-windmill jam.

Apptis CTO Phil Horvitz, president Paul Leslie and wife Julia. Paul, whose denim vest is, by all objective measures, simply awesome, tells us Apptis is hosting a cloud computing camp Nov. 12, where industry pros get together to discuss any relevant topic on their minds. Paul is probably a little disappointed this morning considering his beloved Boston Red Sox are not going to the World Series, but after two titles in four years, we expect a short grieving period.

Nat Kannan and wife Leslie with IMC CEO Sudhakar Shenoy. We all know Sudhakar as a man about town, but he's also pretty popular on the Web, using Facebook "to keep in touch with the kids." Nat tells us he's starting a new company called Jeeva Portals, so keep your eyes open to see what they do.

It's NVTC President Bobbie Kilberg front and center with Equal Footing Foundation's Lee Benton and Colleen Hahn, Focus Technologies Shannon Jameson and former EDS Public Sector VP and NVTC Vice Chair Jim Duffey. Jim tells us he just left Dell and is a free agent, so prospective employers are welcome to call. A week from tonight, NVTC is hosting its annual TechCelebration, with former eBay CEO Meg Whitman as keynote. (We'll be there, although would selling our tix on eBay be more appropriate?)

NVCF President Eileen Ellsworth and BB&T Regional President Don Strehle. The NVCF promotes philanthropy for community needs and has raised more than $3 million in the past year alone. Since this photo is from the waist up, you can't be sure if Don is sporting denim. We just like leaving some things to the imagination.

Today’s Lunch Debate!

We snapped this at the Daily Grille today of everyone’s favorite presidential debate moderator, Bob Schieffer, with our lunch pal Doug Poretz, right, and his colleague Ron Faucheux.  Doug, known to many of our tech readers, is co-founder of Qorvis Communications, and Ron is president of its research arm, Clarus. Bob tried to give each man two minutes to express his views, but  they preferred to just go back and eat.

David Stegon and his girlfriend were totally shown up on the dance floor by a bunch of 60-somethings at Friday's gala. Send dancing tips and story ideas to David@Bisnow.com
