There were so many generals at yesterday’s AFCEA NOVA Air Force IT Day we thought the Harlem Globetrotters were playing. (If that reference is obscure: They always play, and beat, the Washington Generals.) We joined more than 1,000 people at the Sheraton Premiere in Vienna dining on steak and shrimp to hear the latest in Air Force IT from none other than...

Air Force CIO LTG Mike Peterson who told the audience he just returned from London and Madrid where he met with leaders of the Spanish and Royal Air Forces to discuss the American CIO system. “They are interested in the way we empower government agencies to make technology decisions,” he said. In the past six months, Mike told the audience he’s pushed efficiency in projects. “We’ve looked at what the mission owners want and made them more involved in the process, so they get exactly what they want, and can really watch how we spend our dollars.”

Here’s Mike again with former Air Force Deputy CIO Rob Thomas, who tells us he started a new consulting job at Accenture this week after more than 30 years with the branch. Oh, and don’t confuse Rob with the other Rob Thomas (lead singer of Matchbox 20 for the older set). “I spoke at this conference last year and a bunch of girls came in because a sign outside said ‘Keynote Speaker: Rob Thomas,’” he says, noting the followed him out to his car. We guess there are worse people to share a name with.

SM&A’s Barbara Moffatt and CACI CEO (and AFCEA International Chairman) Paul Cofoni. These two worked together at CSC, so we found them in the middle of a reunion. Paul tells us CACI is doing so well, especially in IT and cyber security, that he’s ready to “pinch himself.” Things got even better late last month as CACI signed on former FBI CIO Zalmai Azmi to lead its law enforcement and national security business. Paul had 23 people (including five grandkids) over for Thanksgiving, but is heading to Ft. Lauderdale for Christmas at the beach. “I also hope to catch some hockey,” says Paul, who went from not liking the sport to being a Caps season ticket holder in two years.

Air Force Brigadier Gen. Bob Stonestreet, Headrick Partners’ Randy Headrick, and Air Force National Guard Col. Bruce Babcock. Bruce tells us the Air National Guard is leading the branch in fighting Homeland Security. “We’re at the forefront of the Homeland Security fight,” he says. We’d also like to mention these guys were uber-patriotic on Thanksgiving “watching football.” What did you think we meant?

Air Force Brig. Gen. Earl Matthews with AtHoc’s Dee Authenreith and Andy Anderson, who has the easiest name to remember we’ve ever heard, especially compared with Dee’s. Andy tells us his California-based company, which has offices in Reston of course, develops warning systems with the Air Force as one of its biggest clients. “If a tornado is about to strike Andrews, we’re the ones who make sure everybody knows,” Andy says. Dee was in line at Best Buy on Black Friday at 4:30 a.m. to get deals on a DVD player and a few other gadgets. “I’d rather sleep in, but if you get there at seven, everything is already gone,” Dee says, not knowing we prefer to do our holiday shopping at Wal-Mart at midnight.

David Stegon will be at INPUT’s Holiday Ball tonight and is dropping in on Digital Sandbox’s 10th Anniversary Party.
