Food, jewelry, art, movies, fundraising parties: could Tuesday in DC get any better?

Last night, we went to a cocktail reception to celebrate the launch of Dishing it Out, a one-hour radio show Sunday mornings on 1500AM about what’s hot on the Washington food scene, hosted by Nycci and David Nellis, above. The party was held at the new Zola Wine & Kitchen at 505 9th Street.

Monument

Dan Mesches, CEO of Star Restaurant Group, hosted the party, here with Peter Abrahams, publisher of DC Magazine. In addition to opening this all-in-one wine shop, cooking school and private dining room around the corner from Zola in December, Dan’s group is planning the opening in March of Potenza, an Italian restaurant at 14th and H.

WJLA’s Brandis Griffith and Abby Fenton were among guests who dined on appetizers made all evening in the “open-air” kitchen behind them, including a mouth-watering lobster corn dog.

Pauline Courtois, Jessica Carlson and Lisa Byrne take a break from their hospitality duties at Sofitel up the block.

Baubles and Bittar

Yesterday, we also spoke with jewelry designer Alexis Bittar in preparation for his showing tonight at the Corcoran. His coveted jewelry has been worn by Queen Latifah and Alicia Keys, and Madonna will wear his pieces for her W Magazine photo shoot this spring. He started designing his own handcrafted pieces in 1988, and still operates from Brooklyn, now with 160 employees.

Alexis told us he’s getting ready to show his fall collection in Paris in a couple of weeks. It’s sold at Saks, Takashimaya, MoMa, and Georgetown’s Wink. He advises DC women to have more fun with fashion: “With all the gloomy economic news, this is one of the most exciting times in fashion: Be bold enough to go against the grain; express yourself!” Info on how to meet him is in Where to be Scene, below.

Bob Johnson in DC

We snapped this last night of BET co-founder Bob Johnson, surrounded by his adviser, Witney Schneidman and his friend, Priya Scroggins. Priya, who owns online swimwear boutique Beloved Star, flew in from NYC for the showing of Bob’s extensive collection of African-American art at the Hemphill Gallery on 14th Street.

Heart & Soul’s Edwin Avent and Lockheed’s Nate Thomas praised Bob for sharing his Barnett-Aden Collection with Washington during Black History Month.

Enjoying the art, Entergy Corp’s Darren Peters and Rev. Marcia Dyson, a native Chicagoan, now at the Center for Social Justice and Policy at Georgetown.

Paws for a Cause

Also last night, we joined Fashion for Paws Advisory Director Tara de Nicholas and Latin Concepts’ Jessica Gibson, who came to support Nera Consulting’s Matt Lowe, who raised money for the Humane Society. At the end of the night, he was shy of his $3,000 goal which, we hope, means another party soon.

The party was held at the Kitchen, a new Southern restaurant on Wisconsin Ave. in Glover ParkHere’s the restaurant’s co-owner, Fritz Brogan, with Pam Sorensen, who brought a film crew to document her community involvement for Emeril Green, Chef Emeril Lagasse’s show on Discovery’s Planet Green channel.

3D Under Water

Last night we also checked out the new IMAX movie narrated by Jim Carrey, Under the Sea 3D, and got a clear view of life on the ocean floor. If you love sharks up close and personal and won’t be scared feeling you’re swimming with them, you’ll get a huge kick from this underwater look at coastal Australia. Fun for kids of all ages, especially if you’ve never seen 3D before; opens Friday.

White House Meets DC

Yesterday morning, we snapped the new White House social secretary, Desiree Rogers, a Chicago businesswoman and close friend of the Obamas, who came to the Economic Club to meet the local business community. With her, Aspen Institute CEO and Chair of Teach for America, Walter Isaacson. Club Chair David Rubenstein joked that she probably came to the breakfast to see how we set the table in the nation’s capital.
