Rockin' For
Children's Defense

Biggest party of the season—and it's free: Bisnow's Democrats v. Republicans Hip Happy Hour. 1,500 people from all Washington industries. The great Park at Fourteenth. Oct 15, 6-8 PM, stay and watch the debate. No charge, but you must sign up!

Last night, the Children's Defense Fund celebrated its 35th anniversary with a night of song and dance at the Kennedy Center. Guests were on their feet (not so easy in the uptight KC Concert Hall) for performers N'Kenge, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and the Katrina Children's Choir, and the evening that raised $2.5 million. Hillary Clinton also came by to support the charity where she got her start as an intern.

Actress Holly Robinson Peete and the night's host, singer Jessye Norman. Those nostalgic for ABC's TGIF will remember Holly from Hangin' With Mr. Cooper. Jessye was the youngest person ever to receive the Kennedy Center Honors and is heading a three-week long celebration of African American arts at Carnegie Hall. Check it out here.

Even Hillary (in the red pantsuit, obviously) got in the dancing spirit. The Katrina Children's Choir, comprised of 250 students from hurricane-ravaged areas, brought the night to an end with an exuberant performance.

We thought ABC's George Stephanopoulos would be sick of talking about the current doom and gloom, so we asked for any positives in the situation: "The country is engaged." (We think that's the first time a pundit hasn't had to use the words "bailout," "recession," or "end of days" in a while.) He added, "I anticipate near record turnout at the polls come November."

Donna Schaefer and husband Dean Alexander, a photographer, just returned from shoots in Belgium, Latvia, Spain, and Italy. He gave us some helpful tips like removing the lens cap and pointing the camera at our subjects.

CDF's Heidi Hess and Ariel Hayes. Heidi is training for the Chicago Marathon and Ariel just returned from India where she stayed with a former exchange student who's now a Supreme Court Justice.

GW law students Rebecca Lovie, Theis Finler, and Chris Roberts. Chris buys and sells motorcycles and currently rides a R11S0R, which we pretended to know all about. Theis, more fond of older modes of transport, just completed a triathlon.

School psychologist Brianna DeLauder and architect Trevor Schueneman, a part-time professional poker player, who just finished 5th in the Bogota Open. Must be his unusual poker face.

CDF's Wylie Chen, Lisa Cobhan, and Adren Wilson. Adren is attending Harvard grad school and is the former assistant secretary of the Louisiana Dept. of Social Services.

Ashli Scott and Kat Hutchison work for South Carolina Congressman John Spratt. His district just approved the construction of a library to be named after CDF founder Marian Wright Edelman. We wonder how they got tickets..

PILSNER FEST PARTY (1602 U St NW, 6-10pm): U Street bar Local 16 is hosting this mini Oktoberfest. Make sure your lederhosen are dryer-safe because you're sure to spill some mustard while eating the complimentary brats.

DEBATES AT THE RED DERBY (3718 14th St NW, 9pm): Because after hearing the answers, you'll need a drink. This debate drinking game is sure to be a hoot.
