Association Bisnow
September 5, 2008

By popular demand, and also because we’re back from summer vacay, the Scene herewith returns! Let us know your parties and passions, and we’ll be there (unless there’s a better party): WayChill@Bisnow.com.

Even before the décor was fully finished…but with a fresh liquor license hot in hand, Current (1215 Conn Ave) opened its doors to Friends and Family (and the masses). We were at the “soft opening” of this hopeful hotspot that took the place of the popular Dragonfly in the Connecticut corridor. The Current concept is about water, water everywhere, a sure spot for DC scenesters who can drink like a fish.

L2 Lounge’s Rodrigo Garcia, Osmar Nunez-Vilches (the Buenos Aires mastermind behind portions of the Latin Concepts enterprise), and “Dr. Chris” Rothstein, the nightspot’s designated Interventional Radiologist. When not X-raying on the dance floor, he can be found at Sibley Hospital.

Dancers take a break on Current’s 2nd floor. Down below, entering guests look up through water vaults at the dancing above. Some of the fixtures to come: waterfalls and stream light displays.

We spotted Miss DC 2006, Kate Michael, right, at Bobby Lew’s in SOMO (that’s Southern Adam’s Morgan, of course) with Patrick Mara. Mara, a Republican running for DC Council, is a manager of government relations for ML Strategies. Kate, who blogs at K Street Kate, was with fellow DC blogger Chandler Ramelli, left, and BearingPoint consultant Colleen Morrow. Bobby Lew’s claims that their dress code is simple: "shoes and a wallet." (Shoes very optional, we think.)

New Yorkers may run to the Hamptons in August, but here in DC we’re still making waves during summer’s closing month. We caught up with Sarah Wingfield and Fletcher Gill, Directors and Co-founders of Luke’s Wings. This non-profit provides travel planning and plane tickets to the families of service members hospitalized at the Army Medical Center. They closed off the summer with a fundraiser at The Rookery. Fletcher, Vice President of Tenant Representation at Montview Realty Advisors, and Sarah, a former Redskins ambassador, receive only $1.00 a year for their efforts. Their 200 shiny pennies are the sole salaries Luke's Wings pays.

The armed forces guys take leave with Luke’s Wings supporters. The nonprofit was plugged earlier this summer by sultan of gossip Perez Hilton and is throwing a night of improv Sept. 13 at the Bethesda Theatre

Her platform may be the Polaris Project—she was at The Park in August supporting the organization, a non-profit fighting against human trafficking—but Miss DC 2008, Kate Marie Grinold, also supports our troops.
