First New Year's idea:  the wonderful new Sushiko in Chevy Chase. From 530 to 8 PM they’ll serve their regular menu; then at 9 PM they’ll offer fantastic special menus at $75 a person, including complimentary campagne, party favors, and of course a dance floor. We’ll be there!  For reservations or information:  301-961-1644, allen@sushikorestaurants.com

The Bisnow crew was at Josephine several nights last week.

Spinning his signature house music, Grammy Award winning DJ/Producer Roger Sanchez, left, packed Josephine on Friday night, here with partygoers Alexis Levine and Eric Lund.

The scene, with Santa looking on.

Dean Gold is Cleveland Park’s favorite chef, and one of Washington’s great neighborhood restaurateurs. His three-and-a-half year old rustic Italian gathering spot, Dino, at the corner of Connecticut and Ordway, is brim full every night with a vibrant crowd that loves gourmet food and informal atmosphere. This afternoon we stopped by to find Dean cooking up this kumquat mostarda for tonight to accompany a roasted garlic and gorgonzola appetizer. “I’m turning into a Tuscan Grandma,” he told us.

A slow-roasted duck, to be served with Campari grapefruit sauce for New Year’s: Good he’s starting now; it takes 10 days to make. Here, he’s getting the moisture out. The duck is all natural, from a family farm in Pennsylvania.  It costs him a few pennies more, but it’s ten times the flavor. More info: http://www.dino-dc.com/

30,000 turned out for the EagleBank Bowl Saturday—a triumph for a college football game no one had ever heard of just a few months ago. And despite the freezing weather, warmth was provided by the nostalgia of the first football played at RFK in a decade, and the excitement of a surprise finish in the game itself. Having Navy involved added a lot of class, as seen above. But although they pounded Wake Forest 13 to zip with four minutes left in the half, the Demon Deacons surged ahead in the fourth quarter and ended up beating the Midshipmen 29 to 19

At the game, we ran into our friend Rob Wilder, co-founder of Austin Grille, Zaytinya, Jaleo, Oyamel, Café Atlantico, but now a hotelier! With colleague and celebrity chef Jose Andres, his investor group has just opened SLS Hotel  on La Cienega in Beverly Hills, managed by Starwood in their "Luxury Collection." Wow, a Washingtonian teaching Angelenos sophistication.  Hmm, a sign of the times as the new JFK arrives in town?
