April 24, 2013

Glen Campbell &
Terry McMillan!

Last night we went to the National Alzheimer's Dinner at the Renaissance DC Hotel to see country music legend Glen Campbell receive the Sargent and Eunice Shriver Profiles in Dignity Award.

We snapped the recording legend flanked by Alzheimer's Assn board member Gerry Sampson, Sen. Mitch McConnell, Alzheimer's CEO Harry Johns, former Sen. Jerry Moran, and by Sen. Tom Harkin. The three Members were honored for their work fighting Alzheimer's. Guests also enjoyed a cocktail reception and dinner.

Parkinson Foundation!

We joined the Parkinson Foundation for its annual gala at the Wardman Park Marriott and snapped the night's emcees, journalists Steve and Cokie Roberts, here with Susan Feiffer.

The night raised funds to support free services for DC-area people with Parkinson's and their families. Here, Richard Schena, Board member Bert King, Susan King and vice chair Donna Schena.

There were cocktails, dinner, silent auction, and music by Phoenix. Here, Brooklyn Parkinson Group's Olie Westheimer, SUNY's Ivan Bodis-Wollner and PFNCA exec director Susan Garvey.

Terry McMillan!

We went to meet acclaimed novelist Terry McMillan (How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Waiting to Exhale) at an intimate reception hosted by Conrad Cafritz at hip cocktail lounge, A-Bar, of his hotel, Avenue Suites at 25th & Penn. He's on the board of literary society PEN/Faulkner; we snapped them with its president Frazier O'Leary (right). At left, author Dolen Perkins-Valdez. Terry said she loves their work in schools; earlier in the day she visited McKinley High School and was thrilled to meet kids in a book club.

We snapped Conrad again flanked by PEN/Faulkner EVP Willee Lewis and by MSRB's Leslie Carey and K&L Gates' Bill Kirk.

Ultimate Girl's Night Out!

We went to Ultimate Girl's Night Out Saturday, complete with manicurist, masseuse, and make-up artists, at Chinatown's Pepco Edison Place Gallery, hosted by Fox5 News Anchor Shawn Yancy (right). We snapped her with co-worker, Fox5 Meteorologist Sue Palka. They flank Pepco VP of Corp. Citizenship, Debbie Jarvis.

The event, now in its fourth year, brought guests and vendors together for drinks, delicacies, mini-makeovers and, the highlight of the evening, the designer clothing exchange, as guests were invited to spring clean their closets and swap for new duds. Here, Roselle Center for Healing's Jennifer Sims, Tigerlily Foundation prez Maimah Karmo, and W Salon's Sounty West.

Items that weren't swapped were donated to Dress for Success DC or Martha's Outfitters, a community thrift store in the U Street Corridor. We snapped representatives of both organizations: Martha's Table manager Gyasi Payton, former Dress for Success DC exec director Megan Goffney, and its Advisory Board Prez Jessica Hanson.

To launch a new series of arts salons that discuss dance as an art form, there was a breakfast at the Arts Club of Washington, a performance by DTSB&Co dancers (www.dtsbco.com), and a conversation about why dance occurs all over the world. Here, the hosts and organizers: The World Bank's Flavius Mihaies flanked by DTSB & Co's Artistic Director Dana Tai Soon Burgess, dancer Sarah Halzack, and Associate Artistic Director Kelly Southall.

Alfredo Flores and Merjan Bubernack contributed to this issue.
