CAPital Stars!

Last night we went to the Kennedy Center to see the most talented performers in DC’s public and charter high schools and to raise funds for the DC College Access Program, DC-CAP, which has sent 21,000 DC kids to college.

Raul Fernandez (right) had just been announced as the successor to Joe Robert as Fight Night chair. The entrepreneur and DC-CAP board member delighted the winners by doubling their college scholarships. We snapped him with NGP Technology Partners’ Philip Deutch and Facebook global policy VP Marne Levine.

One of three celebrity judges, along with Rickey Minor and Dionne Warwick, Kennedy Center artist in residence Debbie Allen gave thoughtful critiques to each of the performers. We saw her surrounded by DC Public Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson and College Success Foundation exec director Herb Tillery.

Washington Post CEO Don Graham, who’s the DC-CAP board chair, said he never dreamed it would be this successful when they first started the program in 1999. He’s surrounded by retired San Diego Charger and Central State University athletic director Kellen Winslow and by Bloomberg’s Amanda Bennett.

The evening was sponsored by the UAE Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba and his wife Abeer Shoukry.

After the audience heard solos from the 10 finalists, all the performers took the stage. The winner, a singer, Duke Ellington senior Niya Norwood (in red), blew everyone away with her talent and poise.

There was a private soiree at Sax Lounge following the Big Sean and Trey Songz concert at Constitution Hall Saturday night. We saw the rappers with a fan.

The Washington Wizards were represented by John Wall and Jordan Crawford.

The party was organized by The Standard Events’ Ray Hamilton and Omari Ware.

Hey Singles!
Following the success of our last Singles Schmooze, we're inviting you all on a second date. This time we're taking over Penn Quarter's 901 Restaurant and Bar, which recently revamped its menu with an Asian theme. We'll have two hours of open bar, hors d'oeuvres and, of course, networking with DC’s most eligible professionals. Join The Scene Bisnow March 20! RSVP here.

Caliente at CO2!

We went to Bethesda’s Cesco Osteria at its new Woodmont location and saw hot salsa group, Trio Caliente, playing in the adjacent Co2 Lounge. We snapped the band, Amilcar Cruz, Deborah Benner, and Miguel Bard, flanking Co2 founder Mitch Weber.
