Jazz Legends!

Welcome to the The Scene Bisnow New York! Bisnow publishes 18 fun, informative, and mercifully short online newsletters in 10 cities. And they're free! Enjoy and send us story ideas about great parties, happy hours, charity galas, and restaurant or club openings.

Last night the National Endowment for the Arts had a concert ceremony at Lincoln Center honoring jazz greats and, for the first time, the NEA bestowed a group award to the prolific Marsalis family.

Jazz pianist Kenny Barron with honoree Hubert Laws

Jazz pianist Kenny Barron with honoree Hubert Laws surprised the audience with a performance of Stella by Starlight during the middle of the ceremony.

The award ceremony merged into the concert, which left the audience applauding non-stop as one great performer after another got on stage to give their thank you through music instead of speeches.

Tozer!

Dave Tozer

We stopped by the Union Square studio of Grammy award winning producer and songwriter Dave Tozer. He’s worked with John Legend, Kanye West, and John Mayer; Dave tells us he’s now working with Justin Timberlake and his hip-hop rock band, Free Sol, in addition to a Musiq Soulchild / Jazmine Sullivan duet, and with Bridget Kelly, who recently finished three months on tour with Jay Z.

Roll Tide!

The Scene Bisnow reporter Meredith Brown

We headed to Billy Hurricane’s in the East Village on Saturday night to bid The Scene Bisnow reporter Meredith Brown farewell as she moves from the Big Apple to Alabama. She told us she’s going back for warmer weather and SEC football.

Laura Monk and Prospect New Orleans’ Ashley Chavis.

Meredith’s friends reminisced about their adventures in the city; here, New York & Company assistant buyer Laura Monk and Prospect New Orleans’ Ashley Chavis.

Porten!

Michael Porten

We went to the opening of the Michael Porten Solo Exhibition at PJS Gallery in the West Village on Friday. Artist Michael Porten stands next to a life size piece; he uses his own portrait for most of his work.

Achille Tako, Makeda Saggau-Sackey, and Shauna Racioppi contributed to this issue.
