My Story: Tim Relyea

O'Connor Commercial Property Tax Associates lets you search for all commercial property data including rent and sales comparables in Houston. Use in-depth historical data to identify trends, and more. Check it out here.

When Cushman & Wakefield executive vice chairman Tim Relyea graduated from UT in 1977, he took a job with Johnson & Johnson. But it only took a little over a year before he decided to follow in his father's footsteps and enter CRE. (If the shampoo works, there weren't many tears over the decision.)

Tim Relyea
Tim tells us his dad pushed him towards tenant rep, which wasn't a common path then. He joined Lou and John Cushman's newly-formed tenant rep firm, Cushman Realty Corp, and has stuck with the duo for 35 years. Tim says one of his most memorable deals was Devon Energy's new HQ in OKC, which he believes might be the finest building in North America. His most demanding deal was probably Boeing's HQ move from Seattle to Chicago in 2001. He had to run three cities simultaneously and was on a serious time crunch, so he didn't sleep one minute for the last three days of closing the deal. (And you thought all-nighters were over after college.)

Tim tells us he tries to work harder than his competition and says one thing you can control in a deal is getting in earlier and leaving later. He also likes to stay on top of things many brokers turn over to lawyers; he manages documents and new development trends. Tim used to hunt around the world, including Alaska, Spain, Russia, and Mongolia. Now he plays golf with his wife and takes part in as many outdoor activities as he can with his three daughters—last summer they all went scuba diving for a week—and looks forward to doing the same with his future grandkids. And Tim's excited to share that the family CRE legacy will continue: His eldest daughters became a dentist and a lawyer, but the youngest now works with him.

State-of-the-Art Hospice to Break Ground

Three Square
Three Square Design Group and Camden Construction launched design-build of Harbor Hospice, a 24k SF state-of-the-art hospice community in East Houston. (Above, we snapped Three Square's Jackie Rye, Jake Donaldson, Vanessa Ortega, Katherine Rorie, and Michelle Huertas, with what we call a Crayola 64-pack for adults.) It will house 32 beds and an adjacent 5,000 SF outpatient facility. Three Square's Cindy Donaldson tells us the two firms are developing an efficient prototype that will be used across the Texas-Louisiana region—Harbor Healthcare System has two similar (but smaller) facilities under development in Jasper and Lake Charles.

Harbor Hospice
Cindy's favorite design aspect of Harbor Hospice is the eye-catching two-story vaulted ceiling with Harbor Healthcare's signature lighthouse on top. She says the challenge is designing within the strict Department of Aging and Disability Services nursing facility requirements, regulating things like minimum room size and specifics on food prep facilities. Look for groundbreaking on the Houston and Jasper sites in Q3. Three Square is also working with PinPoint Commercial and Thrive Senior Living on four assisted living facilities in for permit and under construction in Texas and Florida.

Colliers Beefs Up in The Woodlands

Colliers Woodlands office Chamber Ribbon Cutting
Welcome to The Woodlands, Colliers! The firm opened its third Houston-area office there, with a number of new hires: Tom Condon Jr. joined from Betz and Michelle Mathenia-Soderberg, Jason Tangen, and Karla Carter came from Bandier. The office will be led by Bob Parsley, who tells us the office is mostly comprised of land and investment specialists. He and Norm Munoz will continue to lease The Woodlands Development Corp's office buildings.

Hughes Landing office
They're having great success filling up One Hughes Landing, and Bob expects the next building in that development—above, the rendering of Hughes Landings' planned office properties—will launch in the next few months. (They better keep opening buildings—otherwise giant scissors become obsolete.)

Skanska's Celebrations

Diversity
Did you know that donuts in Ireland are called gravy rings? Neither did we, until Skanska celebrated Diversity and Inclusion Week, educating employees and partners on how to create a more inclusive workplace and get more involved in the community. (So other donuts don't feel excluded, employees also learned of alternative names in other countries.) All of the firm's 9,400 US employees celebrated the inaugural event. Here in Houston, Asmir Ibisevic, Skanska diversity committee chair Laura Flores-Urquidi, Jamilia Martinez, and Tony Campos posted family photos to a heritage map. The firm also held a "global taste" potluck lunch and hosted an international breakfast for subcontractors at 3009 Post Oak.

Skanska also recently celebrated Earth Day by planting a 25-year-old, 25-foot heritage oak at 3009 Post Oak. The tree now sits at the entry of the LEED Platinum building.
