WHC Doc Uses
Robots & Rubbish

Washington Hospital Center's Director of Gynecologic Oncology Jonathan Cosin has performed over 100 robot-assisted gynecologic oncology surgeries—unmatched by any local doc—but when he heads to Grenada to volunteer his services twice a year, he must leave the da Vinci robot behind (pretty tough to sneak it through airport security). Instead, he finds many of his surgical supplies in a room of Hospital Center  instruments marked for disposal.

The supplies are in perfect condition, never been used, but strict sanitary regulations require their disposal. For example, items laid out for a surgery must be discarded even if the procedure is canceled. Jonathan points out a bit of irony in the fact that Grenada, by financial necessity, must sanitize and reuse many supplies but actually has a lower surgical infection rate than the US. On his most recent trip, Jonathan demonstrated how to insert mediport catheters for patients receiving chemotherapy. Because of his specialty, one recipient was Jonathan's first male patient in 15 years. In a blow to evolution theory, he observed not much has changed.

Back at WHC, Jonathan's department is getting a boost with the purchase of a second da Vinci robot. He's optimistic they'll have it within a month but definitely by the end of the year. The new robot will lower patient waits from as much as six weeks down to one or two and allow the gynecology division to add uterine fibroid removal to their repertoire of robot-assisted procedures. While leisure time on his Grenada trips is rare, don't feel bad for Jonathan; he finds time back home to race his sailboat, Dawn Treader, in Annapolis. The name refers to The Chronicles of Narnia, though you literary giants knew that.

You say Grenada. I say Grenada. Let's call the whole thing off. Well, not the whole thing. Just the part where we debate national pronunciations. Send story ideas to Curtis@Bisnow.com. Don't be shy.
