Yesterday we got our first look at the new Falls Church home of the Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. With its flat-screen TV’s, Xbox, and Direct TV, it could double as a bachelor pad. But the 11 exam rooms, labs, and on-site med room with pharmacist cleared up any confusion. The event was actually a “Physician Open House,” so we threw on a stethoscope before mingling with Arlington Blvd’s newest tenants.

Division Chief Jeffrey Dome, Medical Director Marianna Horn, and executive director Max Coppes gather in front of the nurse’s station—nicknamed the “fishbowl” for the large glass windows. Max says it provides better access and confidentiality than their previous space.  A spacious new building wasn’t enough excitement for Marianna, so she told us she’s becoming a grandmother in a week. Also her son, probably now starved for attention, sits for his 2nd year med school boards today.

Hematology/Oncology duo Marcie Weil and Samira Rifai met us at the door. Marcie told us in August she’ll co-lead Children’s new Late Effects program for patients who have been off therapy for two years or more. Based out of this office, it will give the Center a chance to monitor cancer effects long-term. And since it’s a multi-disciplinary clinic, it’s one-stop-shopping to see a cardiologist, neuro-psychologist, pulmonologist, oncologist and more. (We would have listed more but the “ist” keys on the keyboard were too tired.)

Associate Medical Director Chris Lawlor and hematologist-oncologist Patrick Chang show off the Center’s new mural, foreshadowing the Center’s built-in art therapy program. Patrick is such a new addition that he hasn’t even had his first day. He’s moving from Children’s Hospital of San Diego and starts in August.
